Best type of Gaskets to use
Best type of Gaskets to use
Ok replacing a lot of parts and need gaskets for valve covers and timing chain cover, including all applicable seals. I was able to get AC Delco gaskets for my intake manifold so thats covered. But in as far as all other gaskets what brand do you recommend other than AC Delco or stick with AC Delco? I did a search and it was endless to find answers. So help a fella out cause I am nearing the point that I need to obtain these items. Thanks in advance!

Re: Best type of Gaskets to use
OK thanks for the replies! I have used Felpro gaskets in the past but had heard some folks state they were junk. Been out of the "ring" so to speak for several years until last 6 months so things can change, that's why I inquired about them. Again, thanks for the replies!

Re: Best type of Gaskets to use
"felpro all the way" is pure brand loyalty NOTHING more.
Far as valve cover gaskets I have always just reused the stockers with never a leak.
Far as Felpro the blue paper intake gaskets have had a habit of delaminating in recent years, additional layer of silicon sealant might be a contributing factor but eveyone I know who had the problem had been coating the whole gasket for YEARS before we started having trouble. So based on my failure experience and that of several friends even with gen 1 and BBC engines I do prefer the stock/Victor Rienz intake gasket.
For the head gasket the standard Felpro offering is so thick that on a performance build to use that gasket you would need to consider having the piston protrude from the deck. Common on LS stuff but not generally done on LT and gen 1. I know of instances of heavily decked LT1s cracking the deck from head bolt hole to bore.
I am not saying Felpro is bad, they are my goto for oil pan and timing cover sets. What I am saying is completely dismiss the input of anyone who says "Felpro all the way" because they are not putting any thought in, just BLIND brand loyalty based on marketing.

Re: Best type of Gaskets to use
I used GM gaskets on everything except the oil pan. For that I used Fel-pro. The Fel-pro oil pan gasket is much better than the GM unit. Mind you I still did use the right stuff on the corners and as the factory manual suggested. I also put a light coating on the rounded parts of the pan gasket too(both sides). I've had enough leaks from those areas to not even want to try it installed dry. Makes getting the pan off a *****, but I'll suffer that any day rather than to deal with oil leaks slung all over my clutch.
My Moroso pan also leaked from one of the bolt holes on the driver's side("flat" area bolt holes). Looks to have been drilled just a hair too far to the inside of the pan. I had to "the right stuff" that hole and bolt to solve the leak from that spot.
