Re: best shortie header

I like the SLP shorties because of the big primaries, but MAC is very good and has the best plug access short of getting LT's. Why are you wanting to swtich back?

Re: best shortie header

Shorty headers are Edelbrock, BBK, JBA, Hooker makes a set... I can't think of any others. All of them are 1 5/8" primaries (except for the Edel's which mix 1 5/8" with even smaller 1 1/2").

Mid length's are SLP's, RK, AS&M, TPiS makes a set, and MAC. All are 1 3/4" primaries except for MAC's which are 1 5/8".

If I was forced to get shorty headers, I'd probably get the Hooker set. For mid's any of them work great. I have RK's though.

Whatever you decide, I'd recommend coating them.

Which are the cheapest out of all the midlengths? A buddy of mine is in the market for a pair, but he wants the cheapest midlengths that he can find. Plug access and integrity are important, so which set of headers would best fit that category? He wants alteast 1 3/4" primaries though...

Don't spend money on shorties. If for some reason your gettin rid of the LT's, just put stock manifolds back on. You wont gain any power from shorties. Why are you gettin rid of the LT's?

MAC's would be your best bet for plug access

Plug access on the 1 3/4" ones will be a bit of a pain, that's just the way it is, nature of the beast.

Cost-wise, the MAC's will probably be the cheapest but I don't think they come coated. Add coating and the price is up there with the others.

I found RK's to be a great compromise of header size (both primary diameter and length) and price. But that was a long time ago, I have no idea what they cost these days.

As for shorty headers not being worth it - I couldn't disagree more. Stock manifolds are a serious choking hazard. I believe ANY header is an improvement over them.

Re: best shortie header

the reason i am looking for shorties is because i will be doing a twin turbo and want to start some were. my long tubes were way to nice to chop up so i sold them and now am looking for some 1 3/4 inch shorties or mid lenght headers to chop up...

This guy pretty much got it right. The SLP's, AS&M's, and RK sports are all almost identical and have 1 3/4" primaries, good for flow but it hurts the plug access. My SLP's kind of suck for plug access, but flow good. Mac's are good proven headers for plug access, fitment, and performance, but they are 1 5/8" primaries.

This guy doesn't know what he's talking about. As the other guy said in this thread he gained 15rwhp off his shorties. I remember seeing one guys post along time ago and he gained almost 25 rwhp off his SLP's. The SLP shorties i have on my car were on Dr. Mudges car and he put down 414 rwhp on his AI heads and cam car with them. I guess that means he could of put down 400+ rwhp on his car with stock manifolds on it too.

Re: best shortie header

383, LPE shorties...400 rwhp/430 rwtq thru an A4 with 3600 stall with rich baseline tune with 12.2:1 A/F ratio. Tuning should get it to 420/450. LT1s seem to respond well to shorties...LS1s...not so much because of the better exhaust manifolds which are "shorties" themselves...
