Best roller rocker to buy?
I was just wondering which RR would be the best to put in my 93' Z. I'm stuck between the Comp Cams Pro Mags, and the Crane Gold race. Does anyone know if the Comp Cams Pro Mags will fit under the stock valve cover. If so, which one should i get? The self aligning 1.6's or the non- self aligning ones. I believe that self aligning RR's should be a drop in Right? I would have to use guide plates and hardened push rods to use the non-self aligning ones. any and all help and ideas are apprecisted . Thanks
I've been researching the threads on this subject for awhile for my 93 and here is what I've concluded.
1) yes the self aligning (SA's) are a less expensive alternative upgrade because you don't need to change as much stuff,
2) SA's are much noisier, but on our 93's we don't have knock sensors that are effected by this extra "knock sound" so it's just anoying.
3) Everyone recomend changing springs and retainers when doing this mod because with the higher lift ratio it is just safer to do so but not strictly nessesary.
4) Non-Self Aligning do require guide plates to keep everything pointing straight and guide plates require hardened push rods.
I will probably go with the NAS option because I don't like needless noise and will call Crane to put together a kt for me.
However.... There is a GM LT4 "HotCam" kit from Sam Taylor Chevy that includes cam, SA Rockers, Springs and retainers for about $465 that will really wake your engine up and that is a very tempting package (the heck with the noise!)

Replacing lifters on a "rollor cam" is not strickly required because unlike flat tappet cam/lifters the lifter doesn't set up a wear pattern which would ruin a new cam. That said, yes old lifters (espesially on a high-milage 93) will probably be weak and may even have damaged rollers, (which is usualy caused by overreving and the roller departing or bouncing off the lobe of the cam) so it would be best to change them as log as you're in there. I plan on running new stocks since they seem to work well and I've never heard anyone having problems with them (or any other for that matter)
