I am getting a 95 trans am on sat. The previous owner said that he always used Mobil 1 synthetic as well as the guy before him used Mobil 1 synthetic. The car has about 122,000 miles on it, and he said that it doesn't use or leak any oil at all. He also said that the car was about due for an oil change. I have heard good things about royal purple, and some people on here said the mobil 1 synthetic was a good choice, and others not so much. Would Royal Purple be a wise choice, and if so which viscosity would be best for an engine with those miles? I live in WV, so this car is more of a summer playtoy, but will get started from time to time in the winter just to make sure everything is still ok with the car. Any help would be great.

Thanks,
Travis

I've always used Mobil 1 without any problems and I believe most people on here do as well.

in my other car, I use 20w-50 in the summer, and 10w 30 in the winter. I use heavier oil in the summer since the valve stem seals are leaking on it a bit. I haven't used synthetic oil before, so would I still run like 10w-40 in the summer with it? The only mods done to the 95 T/A are a CAI, and exhaust, so the car is pretty well stock.

I never drive my Camaro in the winter, so I always keep the same weight in it.

I wouldn't be driving it in the winter either. What weight do you use?

Currently use Mobil 1 in the 46K original mile LT1 motor. Only problem was the common (rear) intake leak that showed up as an oil leak under the car.

Will be switching to Valvoline Full Synthetic with the (new) stroker motor installation only because that's what I use in my BMW's.

my mom has a bmw, but it just has whatever the dealer puts in it.

would 10W-30 in mobil 1 synthetic work? I also saw synthetic oil for high mileage vehichles? Any opinions on that?

Not to get side tracked but, most BMW service dealers use Castrol Full Synthetic as the #1 choice followed by #2 Mobil 1 and #3 Valvoline Full Synthetic.

High mileage oil additives may or may not be of any benifit.. Probably depends on the condition of the engine, it's seals, etc. and how well it's been serviced and maintained. Personally, I dont pay extra for a cure, or expect a long life elixir from a bottle. Just do the service as it should be done. But, stick with a good synthetic if that's how it's been maintained. Just my .02

Good luck

Used Mobile1 the 1st 90k then switched to Royal purple , Why I dont know I just did . Anyway I just tore it down at 115k for a head and cam swap and it was clean as could be ,no sludge, and still had the cross hatch in the cylinders.

You have to consider that when you switch to a synthetic oil there are no paraffin waxes or anything like that in the oil since it is made in a lab. Therefor if you are having "problems" with leaky seals and what not it is going to be worse with the same weight synthetic oil over conventional. Solution, use a thicker weight synthetic.

I used to go back and forth between conventional 10W30 and Mobile 1 10W30 and everything looked good when I tore down my motor somewhere past 100K (don't remember how many miles but it was over 100K).

The only thing you can see really is that I ran to motor lean, haha.... Lowered fuel pressure and then on top of that I sprayed the car leaner, smaller fuel pills than required... that's prolly why on a 100 shot back in the day my car picked up 15mph, lol.

the guy said that the car has had synthetic oil in it for a while now. Probably about 18 to 20 thousand miles, so it really wouldn't be a switch. So if the car had leaky seals and stuff it should be leaking by now, and the guy said that it didn't use any oil, or leak any oil at all. But that is what he said, I didn't check under the car.

You are not getting good information. You are finding out who has the best marketting plans.

Castrol Syntec 0w-30 specifically labled "made in germany" is currently the best option by MEASURED results. By measured I mean the wear metal content of actual used oil is measured.
