I bought my Z in 2001 with the same mileage you have and I've been using Mobil 1 synthetic 10w30.

a LT1 with 75000 usually means some kind of oil leaks, synthetic would only make things worse. just my opinion

Search LT1 there and it will show you that with Mobil 1 5w-30 and 10w-30 result in higher than necessary wear when used in the LT1, some searching over there will tell you what an actual good oil for this motor is. All a poll here will tell you is who markets things well, M1 chosen for the Vette is marketting and has nothing to do with longevity. It needed synthetic for the heat properties the 5w-30 was chosen for CAFE amd M1 at the time(and today is) was the biggest player, their goals are not to make it last forever but to make it past warranty and get good milage doing it.

Some actual good choices for the LT1 would be M1 0w-40 or 5w-40 Truck and SUV, or better yet Castrol Syntec 0w-30 labled Made in Germany on the back lable, that can be hard to find Autozones are supposed to be a good place to look.

I am not saying M1 is a bad oil I recommended two M1s just not the ones everyone mistakenly thinks they should use, it is a quite good oil the 30wts. are just too thinkfor the LT1 I have seen awesome results in other motors one guy with a turbo VW put 15K on one oil change and the analysis was good, but that is not this motor.

I've got a 1994 Z28 with 99,000 miles. I use AMOIL or MOBIL 1 5w30 without any problems.

there's no way in hell that i'm going to run a 0 weight oil. but mine hasn't encountered any leaks and it hasn't had an easy lifetime. i think i'm going to switch to royal purple.

Cool Re: best oil for 75k mile + lt1's?

I'm at almost 130000 mis and use the German Castrol 0W 30 with no detrimental results whatsoever since around 75000 mis (when I first read about it).

Change it out every 3XXX to 5XXX depending on color of oil and have no burning issues ie. adding a quart in between changes yet.

Car runs great!

You just proved your ignorance of oil , the 0w-30 CG is thicker than the M1 30wts. and repeated testing proves it far superior for the LT1 than the M1 30wts.. The first number is only when cold helps it flow better and get to the engine parts faster you should not be abusing the engine while the oil is cold anyway and then once it is warm this oil delivers improved protection and I don't know about you but my engine spends more time running warm than cold.

Do some reading on the oil board and stop spreading ignorance there are analysis of RP, Redline, whatevery you want just search away. Some 5w-30s are goos choices for the LT1 just not M1, a little reasearch and you will see that.

Re: best oil for 75k mile + lt1's?

It is just my frustration showing, on the site I listed is proof positive of the oil everyone thinks is great for this motor not being so great. Yet your poll keeps going up for it due to people's refusal to look at facts and insistance to make decisions based on preconcieved notions. Not saying everyone should just take my word for it either, that is why the link, the GC has caused such a stir on the oil board that they are currently collecting the $400-700 it will take to get an indepth analysis of it's makup not a regular oil analysis but a chemical composition one, these guys are serious and we can learn a lot from them.

That was a typo earlier when I wrote CG it is GC for German Castrol, from my reading most Castrol Syntec is not anything spectacular but some of the 0w-30 is labled Made in Germany and that stuff is different, even just the look and small been described by numerous people to be "nuclear green" and smells like gummy bears. It is turning up impressive results in a lot of motyors not just the LT1, the LS1 is also pretty fond of it, you may remember an oil nut that was here that went by Patman, he is a moderator over there he was using this in his LT1 till he got a used LS1 Vette which he now uses it in. He drives that Vette a lot and hard, it is his daily driver and he lives in Canada, he has posted some great analysis results for this stuff as have many others. Personally I have not found it yet but a memeber from that board PMed me just today to tell me where to get some it is a bit out of my way but I will make the time, for anyone near me he found it at the Stevens point WI AutoZone.

Re: best oil for 75k mile + lt1's?

A lot of this is splitting hairs, in my opinion. You want to get that extra x% performance, then the German Castrol might be better.

Personally, I like the Mobil 1 10W30 because it's proven to work well for me. I have 69,000 miles on the motor. I don't leak any oil. I don't burn any oil between 4000-5000 mile oil changes. I also like that I can buy a 5 qt jug of it for less than $19 at Walmart.

The German Castrol probably is better, but I'm happy with what I have.

Re: best oil for 75k mile + lt1's?

I would like to know how people think an oil "works well for me."

Does this mean availability in stores? No leaks under the car? Don't have to add any oil between changes?

I personally admit I don't know much about oil but I can't see how anyone would know if an oil works well for them unless they get their oil lab tested after oil changes to see if the oil is behaving the way it should or not where areas you'll never see.

Re: best oil for 75k mile + lt1's?

I get a good deal on the 5 gallon pale of Royal Purple 10W-30, so thats what I've been using in my car for the past six months or so. I switched from M1 5W-30 after seeing all of these posts and then noticing how thin it was when I was draining it the last time I used it. The Royal Purple is working out for me. Seems to make the car idle and rev smoother. And at around 20 bucks an oil change, the price ain't bad either.

Yes, "works well for me" is a subjective term. I'm not beeing scientific at all here.

Yes, no oil leaks and no oil loss is good by me. Plus, Mobil 1 10W30 is a good oil, without question. Better than conventional oil, shown in oil analysis. The castrol might be a tad bit better, but not worth me switching. I have seen a website where a guy did a very thorough long term analysis of Mobil 1 in his f-body and it did great. I'll try to find it.

Re: best oil for 75k mile + lt1's?

Perhaps German Castrol was developed with a German motor in mind. Just stick to Mobil 1 5W-30 synthetic. Also, Chevy motors are always 5W-30 weight standard, not 10W-30. And yea it looks like some people do take their oil just a little to seriously.
