I'm pretty happy with my Hooker shorties. The Y-pipe bolted right up, no modifications needed either. Got 'em at TByrne (when they were having a sale).

Coated BBKs. Relatively inexpensive, 16 gauge pipe and 3/8" flanges. Basically they won't warp or deflect under heat. Very nice pieces.

Re: Best LT1 shortie headers?

to my knowledge the Arizona Speed and Marine are the best shorty headers on the market. They also cost a whole helluva lot of money. I was going to buy the SLP shorties with the 1 3/4" primaries. Just haven't done it yet due to lack of cash.

ASM's are Mid-length, but on that note:

Why settle for shorty headers when mid-length will out perform them without sacrificing any of the things that long tubes have to. The difference between shorty and mid-length headers on an LT1 is quite measurable actually. And with the number of smog legal, and no-CARB but smog legal elsewhere mid-length designs is quite prolific actually.

I know that the ASM's are deemed to be the best out there, if not better than LT's even (different discussion, have a search). They're nice because they bolt right up, no welding required.

Mac headers don't have the larger primaries (they use 1 5/8") but their gains on a bolt on motor is quite phenomonal. They're also a true bolt in.

Other mids out there would be SLP, RK Sport (ASM copy), Edlebrock, and I think there's more, but it's early and my brain isn't fully awake yet.

Re: Best LT1 shortie headers?

I thought my SLP shorties were pretty awesome on a bolt on engine, but im building a pretty stout engine now so i switched to jet-hot LT's. My SLP headers are for sale though

Re: Best LT1 shortie headers?

Just for reference, I have MAC midlength headers (which is what you would get for your year anyways). First time to the 1/4 mile track, I only had a CAI. Ran 14.4@98 in hot humid weather. Just adding the MAC's and Hooker catback got my times in my sig, in the same crappy hot humid weather.

Some of my verified actual numbers:
Gains from the MAC's and Hooker catback(did both at the same time):
35 rwhp, 30 rwtq

At the 1/4 mile track, same weather, same launch, gained 0.6-0.7 seconds and 4-5 MPH

I have timeslips and dyno curves to prove it. I like to have real numbers before I make a buying decision, so hope this helps you out.

Re: Best LT1 shortie headers?

Just for reference as well, with my SLP's and Flowmaster Thunder Series caback i ran a 13.87 in humid summer weather, with only a MSD 6AL, HPP+ 300+ race wires and 160* stat. And this was through 2.73's. Havent taken it to the track since the tranny work. I didnt even have a cold air to let her breathe and take full advantage of the SLP's. I would say SLP all the way!!!!

Are they coated slp's? I have a friend in need of some headers? how much? I run them and think they are a very good header, and definately out flows my output.

Re: Best LT1 shortie headers?

Mods - Not much, Eletric waterpump and magnaflow exhaust. My budget is kinda low so that is why i was thinking about shorties, I took my manifolds off after breaking some bolts when I dropped the y-pipe to change the starter.(though in hindsite, i should have just onbolted back and the cat instead of the manifolds) And I figured, I already did the work, why not put on headers?

Re: Best LT1 shortie headers?

No they arent coated, i ran them with header wrap and the wrap was pretty awesome. I could have the engine running for like 20 mins and reach down and hold on to my headers with the wrap on. I can get pics of them if you want. Just might take a few days since its the weekend. Let me know.
