Best Cam for STOCK heads, 1.6RR, under 6400RPM's

What cam would you guys pick for stock heads, on a 1.6RR, 918's.

Must be shifted below 6400RPM's. I dont want to spin the thing WAY up there.

I have heard that the CC306 is pretty much pointless on stock heads, as well as the 847. They are a little more than I am looking for anyways I think, so role them out.

I was looking more in the 220/230 range with either 114 or 112 LSA. Such as CC503, CC305, Hot Cam, etc.

I want to spray a 50 shot on it, so a 114LSA would be better for me.

Off The Shelf cams only. This is only a Get-Me-By set up while I'm still in college. I will chip out the cash for a custom grind when I actually need one

You won't benefit from a 114LSA if youre only spraying a 50 shot...maybe 200+
I'd go with a CC503. I have mine shifting at 6150, and went 12.2 @ 109 with a rich-as-hell A/F (10-11:1) N/A.

Thats what I like too hear. Everyone kept saying that it is about the same as a Hot Cam, but it seems like its under the curve area is much better. Faster times, for the most part from what I seen.

Just curious, what length PR are you using? And what springs?

7.200" comp magnum pushrods, comp 918 beehives. Talk to Bret Bauer, he'll tell you exactly what parts you need for your setup.....he helped me out a ton and got me some great prices.

Javier, thats cause no one reputable other than you and Bret I believe commented to them. I was trying to get some of the people who have been there done that, not someone who just looks at the cam specs and tells me it SHOULD shift at this RPM, SHOULD idle nice, SHOULD do this. That and alot of people keep saying jsut get a custom grind.

If they read the question before they awnsered I wouldnt have too.

I dont WANT a custom grind. Im not spending that kind of money now. This is a college get my by budget build up. When im done with school, then I will build it the way I want with a custom grind.

And the few reputable sources I have contacted havent emailed me back. Its been 2 weeks and Comp wont email me back.

So sorry if its getting old.

Not a problem dude....it took me awhile to make a decision too. There are so many cams to choose from...

Let me know if you need exact part numbers and I'll get em for ya. Just gotta find the invoices from Bret/Comp.

I hear ya. I saw some whack replies in your other poll thread.

Well, all I can say is with a good tune the cc503 has excellent street manners, gobs of torque down low, powerful midrange, and a very respectable top end.

I'd go cc503 or hotcam, of course I lean towards the cc503 but I've seen some oddly wicked hotcam #'s.

Re: Best Cam for STOCK heads, 1.6RR, under 6400RPM's

I would go with a GM846... it is smaller than the 847, but bigger than the hotcam and cc305.

It is a similar cam to the cc503

The specs are 222/230 .509/.529 112
vs cc503 224/230 .503/.510 112

So overall, the cams are roughly similar... if you can get a GMPP parts hookup I would go with the 846 (crane makes an identical cam available through thunder racing)

The Hotcam, CC305, 503 are all going to perform VERY similar. You really can't go wrong with any of them. You will find people who have run good numbers with all of the above cams. My '97 with stock heads ran a 12.5 @ 111.5 with the CC305, Javier has run good numbers with the 503, and a number of guys have ran very good times with the hotcam on stock heads. They will all have very similar street manners (all very mild), have a somewhat lopey idle, make 330-345 rwhp and peak around 5800-6100 rpm.

Re: Best Cam for STOCK heads, 1.6RR, under 6400RPM's

the cc305 and xe503 and hotcam are very good cams for stock heads

id say chose between the305 and 503

the 503 will perform like the hotcam but from some research ive notice it performed slightly better than the hotcam. just make sure u upgrade ur valvetrain cuz i hear it harsher on ur VT than normal grinds

not really sure abotu the 305 but 97bowtie ha some good info

Re: Best Cam for STOCK heads, 1.6RR, under 6400RPM's

Will be running it on 10* L&R's, 918's, Pro Mags 7/16"s, and Hi-Tech push rods. So its almost overkill for a cam like this.

Ive narrowed it down to either a CC503, GM846(If the price is right), or a LE1.

I think the LE1 would make the most peak power, so I have to price things out and go from there.

Thanks everyone though. I finally am getting the kind of responses I wanted to hear. I heard some pretty wacked responses in the past 2 weeks. And its hard to decide what I really wanted with out some of the more "respectable" names on here posting.

Thank you all though.

i hear u have to do a little modifications to the 846 to fit an lt1 , i think it was welding on the dowel or somthing
i was looking for more of a straigh bolt on , so that led me away (i have my reasons)

Yea, I can weld, just not the best so I would have to have someone do that for me to have it done right I suppose? I thought it was made to fit right in a LT1/4 motor though? Ill have to check it out. Thanks for pointing it out to me though.
