Best $2500 I can spend on a 96 Z

Car is a 94 A4 with the 3.23 rear gears. And has an unkown 3 inch exaust from the manifolds back and a K&N FIPK, it will also have 17x9.5 AFS Grand Sport wheels with 275 tires. LMK What is the best thing I can do to it to gain more performance. I dont really care about handling right now so looking more for stuff to do to the motor. Oh yes and it will have to pass emmissions something besides bolt on is acceptable. Thanks

Let's not forget about the porting of your stock LT1 heads to match a decent cam...

get a cam that will pass emmisions like the lt4 hot cam. roller rockers and new valve springs. The lt4 hot cam kit will cover this. about $500 Get a pair of headers with 1 3/4 primaries atleast $300 but plan on spending more. get your heads ported. About a grand. buy a 52mm throttle body or a 58mm. $100 to $300. get your pcm programed $200. new gaskets about $125. 3 inch cut out $150. do the work your self and have about 350 rwhp.

there are programs that can make your car pass emmisions with a bigger cam. there is a free program on brent's site to do this.

Sorry to ask a question in your post, but i have a 96 Z and i plan on running long tubes with hi flow cats. I am looking at carsound cats on ebay right now, just to make sure, i do need the 3 inch inlet and outlet ones, correct?
Thanks,
Bill

p.s. what is this 'airtube' that is an option to run to my cat. do i need this?

That depends on the diameter of your y-pipe. If it matches the headers, then yes, it should be 3". If they made it smaller, then it's most likely 2.5".

All4Chevy: well the stock exaust is something like 2.75 inches i think. a 3inch cat will work. it can be welded on.

2FNFAST: also to keep your motor cooler and to avoid your stock waterpump from leaking on your distributor (they do when they break) get an electric waterpump about 150 plus gain about 10 more rwhp from it. you may also want a stall convertor of atleast 2500 rpm stock is 1500. but when you do that you will need a drag tire because there is no way you will be getting traction.

Put that 2500 towards a built 4L60E. Or you can get LT's, and put the rest away for a built tranny. Reason I say this is if you got even a hot cam kit, the best shift range for those is a bit over 6100, which will promtly kill your stock tranny. And especially if you were to do the cam swap yourself, total cost for the hotcam kit or another cam kit and stage II ported heads would be close to $1000, maybe a little higher. Just something to consider.

Where is the best place to have the heads ported? The place I looked at it was like 1300 alone.

$1200 covers porting the heads, Ferrea 2.00/1.56 valves, Comp 987 springs, 10 degree retainers, locks, locators, seals, machining for seals and locators, milling, cleaning and assembly.

$400 for just porting

$200 valve job, surface, seals, cleaning and assembly

If you need him to supply the valves add. . . .
$200 for REV or Manley
$240 for Ferrera

Hope this helps!

The place/s I had in mind when listing the stage II port job for 500ish were reputable local machine shops. Around here, 500 is about the going rate for a stage II port job.

For the $400, he FULLY ports your LT1 heads to flow ~275/190...I have yet to see anyone match this...
