bent spindle?

My 1994 Z28 convertible was recently in a side collision and I was told by my local repair shop that the driver's side front rim, hub assembly, rack and pinion steering unit were damaged. Those have been replaced, but now I'm told that, after sending it out to another shop for alignment, the spindle is bent. Can anyone explain to me what exactly this is, if this is a legitimate claim, and where I can get a cheap replacement part? The shop quoted me $342 for the spindle, apparently backordering it from a chevy dealer.

The black part is the spindle. If it is bent it can't be properly aligned.

Typically, how durable are spindles? I can get one at a junkyard for $100, off the same 94 camaro I took the rim off of.
