Belt Slipping?

The other night I was runing around with a 93 Z with 200k miles, I have a 96 Z with 107k. I nailed it and right after shifting into third (I think) it sounded like the belt stoped moving the the pullies kept moving for about a split second. Then RIGHT AFTER I heard it on my car I heard it on his... This also happend in the rain when I got into it to much by accident and the tires spun to over 4000RPM.
I do know my belt is old and needs replaced and I have a new one about to go in. Is it just that our belts are old or something????

P.S. I am 99% sure that that is were the sound is coming from, it does not sound or feel like it came from the trans and it better not have because the A4 in my car is only 2,000 miles old LOL.

Re: Belt Slipping?

Sometimes in the rain my belt will slip, usually on the power steering, but only for a split second.

Check your belt first and see if it looks glazed or frayed, cracked etc.

Your tensioner assembly can also cause problems, as it gets older it will provide less force on the belt, which means less holding power that the belt has on the other pullies.

Re: Belt Slipping?

Agreed. With that many miles there have been a lot of hot/cold cycles... that can affect the tensioner.

But keep it simple first. Remove the belt, it's easy enough to do. Then turn it inside out so that the ribbed section faces ******ds. If there are cracks or missing ribs, then it's time for a new one. Do you have your spash shields on your car? Have they been removed? It is possible to get water on the belt but it would have to squish in around the shield. The belt is probably old.

Re: Belt Slipping?

my belt slips from time to time, when the car is cold on 1st start up. can be quiet on rainy days and chirps like a cricket on dry days. its on new goodyear gatorback belt too. I'll probably do as you're doing and replace the tensioner when my power steering pump, b/c mine whines like crazy now, people ask if i have a supercharger.

Re: Belt Slipping?

Hey my car used to do that when I got on it (but not floored) as it shifted. Then after a trip to the track the tranny gave out on me , lol. I really doubt it is your tranny, because my belt needs to be replaced. I just haven't gotten around to it since I have been doing a T56 conversion .

Re: Belt Slipping?

By the way that wasn't a swear word I posted previously.. "faces the threads". Anyways, I guess it auto-sensored.

Also, you may want to get under your car and look for the infamous cam seal leak (this is where the shaft to the waterpump leaks), any water stains, or a front crank seal leak. A small trickle can give a squeak on start up too.
