BBK headers

I have the 3" ORP that is in my signature on my car and I gathered up enough money to purchase the BBK headers that I want. My car is a dual cat car and I was wondering if anyone knows whether or not my y-pipe will match up to the headers or not?? If not than what size y-pipe will match up to the BBK headers?? Would it be safe to go and buy another y-pipe, perhaps 2 1/2" instead??

If at last option, what other headers might match up to the 3" y-pipe I already have??

Mine were SUPPOSED to fit, but I had to get extra pipe from the cat to the Y-pipe. It was only $40 for that install. I'm sure any shop could do what you need if it doesn't fit perfectly.

I have the BBK headers in and it may not fit. On dual cats cars, the passager side headers is a little longer than the stock manifold. I just got a 2 1/2 in y-pipe made for it

I have the BBK 93-95 style and I would recommend the SLP 1 3/4" coated shorty headers over the BBK for a bigger gain and easier plug access. I know the SLP's will bolt right up because I've installed them before on a 97 car. If I had to do it all again, I'd go with long tube headers.

Just a suggestion. Might not want to go with BBKs for the gains. If youve ever seen an LT1 head the exhaust ports are D shaped, unlike most ports. Ive heard that BBK still manufactured the flanges with O shaped ports, hence not a good match up. Ive heard this hinders performance. If you cant afford longtubes, go with SLPs or MAC with the Ypipe and offroad. Just my opinion.

By using the stock y-pipe, the only problem I had was that the headers bent the Y-pipe so it was touching the frame a little..you need to either cut a bit off the crossmember or bend the Y-pipe just a bit. I have dual cats too...

Thanks for the replies guys. Maybe I shouldn't go with the BBKs then huh? How about the Edelbrock TES headers?? Does anyone recommend those over Mac or SLPs?? Chesee48 I noticed you have them in your sig, do you recommend them over the other headers???

I have a 96 with bkk's. The plugs are easy to get to except for that last one by the fire wall on the driver side. But a O rachet set from sears fixes that. As far as that Y pipe hookup on the pas. side. Yeah it doesnt match up. You have to cut it and install a new peice that comes with the headers. They give you this exhaust rap thing that you bolt on in place of welding. I just welded it up. Only took me about an hour of tinkering. I dont know about performance. I never been to the dyno in my life. shrug.

i have the same question, MAC or Edlebrocks ? By the way what is the size of stock manifolds and Y Pipes on a single cat system? Of all you guys with headers, do most of you run Off road Pipes, i want to run off road pipes but if get pulled over ill fail a visual, should i just gut the cat instead?

Out of probably 100 guys with shorties on this board maybe 1 has Edelbrocks or BBKs, that doesnt necessarily mean theyre bad, but theres usually a reason no one buys them, Ive definitely heard bad things about BBk, and a few about edelbrock. If youve got the money go with SLP or ASAM since they are both 1 3/4 primaries compared to 1 5/8 like on all the other shorties. If youre not set on shorties get some hookers jet hot coated and a mufflex ypipe for about 900. For the performance in my opinion get MACs for the money, and SLP or ASAM for a little more cash and even more performance, some people even say that SLP and ASAM perform just as well as longtubes but longtubes have a smoother torque curve. hope that helps

I just conveted to 94-95 style headers on my 97z, much easier than messing around with all that crap.

My old Z28, A4 3.23 with stock stall, and a cc305 with edelbrok shorties went 12.89 @106, so they must not be too terrible
