The battle thus far... (headers)
The battle thus far... (headers)
Today i started installing my 93 SLP headers. I spent about 12 hours so far and heres what i got done:
-Deleted the AIR, tube and pump
-Removed Alternater, starter and dip stick
-Removed Y pype, both manifolds and plugs
-Installed poly motor mounts
Still need to delete the EGR, run new plug wires and install the new headers and put it all together. The hardest part by far was the passenger motor mount and dip stick
, spent a couple hours on those 2 things alone. I was looking at the Y pipe to see how it will line up with the stock cat but i dont think it will fit. Am i wrong or do i need a shorter cat? I was also thinking of getting rid of the cat, but will it get very raspy with the magnaflow?
Ill bring my cammera to the shop tomorrow and post pics and update this thred.

What could take two hours with the dipstick? It came right out for me. Here's a tip though, throw the dipstick in the freezer for a few hours before re-install, and it'll pop right in.
As for deleting the cat, I did that with my MAC mid's and Borla and it actually got LESS raspy, weird....

Yeah, it's a pain. The headers went back on the new heads much easier
when I dropped the engine out from under the car.
(I'll take an extra 4 hours work over destroying my knuckles and getting frustrated any day)
Like 1racerdude said, take your time.
Make sure all the bolts are in right, no folded gaskets, no stray wires touching
the headers. You'll be very hapy in the long run.
As for room for the cat, I ended up chopping the Y pipe to mate with the cat.
The Y-juction is about 3" ahead of the cat now, that was about as close as
you can get without alterning the cat. But it allowed the cat to sit in it's
stock location. The only down side is that my cat is now welded to my Y LOL.
Good luck man

Thomas.

I believe it's mounted on a bracket, held in place by one of the intake bolts.
I did take some pics but they came out prety dark, so i wont bother uploading them right now.

ha...I hate being reminded of how I spent the end of my winter break a couple of years ago - freezing cold, alone, hungry, sore, tired, angry......as far as battle wounds - I got a nice scar on the top of my right hand because I was so determined to break this bolt loose on the stock y-pipe and when it FINALLY decided to break, I threw all my strength into some screw or something up there that dug itself into my hand. Oh then there was the 45 minutes it took to get the driver's side header on because I was doing it myself and couldn't get the two end bolts in and my RTV is all drying up during this time while I keep losing bolts. Plus much more.
But, happy ending is I haven't had any leaks and not one bolt has backed out ever (I do check the tq once in a while). And the scar is kinda cool.
Good luck with the rest of the install!

They are on now and it runs OK. The drivers side O2 sensor is too short so i just ordered a 12" extension, and im still waiting for a tune from ion. I had to take it to a muffler shop to bolt on the Y (need some low profile sockets or something because i couldnt get it on) and they also welded on a 3" cat, they said they couldnt do a 3" pipe with a flair to bolt on to the cat back. But thats fine because its lowder then it was before but i didnt want it too loud. I found it annoying driving to the muffler shop with stright headers.
Ill have a video that ill put in the sig when i get the rest of my parts, i just have a couple pics for now. Like i said earlyer, plug access isnt bad except for #5.

For future refrence, anyone wanting to put 93 SLPs on their 95, you need a 12" O2 extension and before you put the dip stick in sand it down, its even harder to put back in then it is to take out.

Re: The battle thus far... (headers)
It took 3 weeks to get my headers on, granted I did not work on them every day.
I had to mod"
The mounting bolt holes
The steering shaft
The rear brake line
The dipstick mount
The y-pipe
Brake line shield
K-member
After all that they fir great with no issues period.
