Bad valve guides cause this?
Re: Bad valve guides cause this?
Not likely, blue smoke yes, dipstick out no. Sounds like you got a major compression leak. Bad rings, hole in a piston ect. Maybe bad adjustment on valves. Blue smoke usually indicates oil burning as i am sure you know. You may want to do a comprression test or leak down test.

Re: Bad valve guides cause this?
Thanx for the quick reply.
I knew that oil could leak through into the cylinders but wasn't sure it pressure would go the opposite way.
Do you have to pull the heads to change the guides?

Normaly on valve guides you need to take the heads to a machine shop. The valve seals can be changed ing the car PITA but can be done. My concern is pressure in the crankcase to blow the dipstick out. I would still do a compresson on leakdown test before pulling the heads.
