Bad sound with idle rev

I'm getting any ugly sound when I blurp the throttle from an idle. I thought it was coming from the valve train, but I readjusted the valves and it is still there. I also thought it was coming from the driver's side, but I went to the passanger side, it sounded like it was coming from that side (passanger). That makes me think it's not the valve train. It sounds like spark knock, but it only happens with a blurp of the throttle from idle. Could it be spark knock? Maybe a timing difference between the two different (idle vs first initial throttle push) rpm and map readings could cause it?

Do you have access to a stethoscope(sp). You may be able to pinpoint where the noise is coming from with that tool.

Re: Bad sound with idle rev

The opti has less than 20 miles on it. The car seems to run fine but it makes that noise from an idle. I just don't anything bad to come of the noise that I could have prevented. The new motor only has like 500 miles on it. If the timing chain had jumped a tooth, wouldn't the car have a hard time holding idle? It idles fine. The car isn't as powerful as I think it should be, but then again, it hasn't been dyno tuned. Just a "mail order" tune from Joe O. I could buy a stethoscope. I guess I would have to just probe and listen? Any other ideas guys. Thanks.

what is an ugly noise? do your best to describe it. grinding. rattling. chattering. squeek? this might help you get better seponces.

Like I said, it sounds like a loud spark knock from inside the car. From under the hood, it sounds like a loud snap. I might try to get video if I can and post it. That could probably help. Thanks for the responses guys.

Re: Bad sound with idle rev

My MAP is reading high (pulling less vacuum than it should) at idle (~.7 bar) and I noticed that in my spark advance tables, at 800 rpm and .7 bar, there is quite a bit of timing. So, I pulled some of the timing out at an idle and now I don't get that sound anymore. I guess it was detonation. I'm glad it is gone. I appreciate everyone's help. Just wanted to follow up with the solution.
