I would say if it is hard to move or it feels like there is something giving it some resistance, so it doesnt move freely. You know like bad wheel bearings or something like that. Also, If the middle of the lifter goes down but doenst come back up, then its bad.

Is there a way to tell if you still have your motor together?

If u have the ability to scan the car, check the vacuum pressure. If ur vacuum pressure if very uneven and sporadic, there is a good chance u have bad/weak lifters.

Also not a leaking intake gasket could make vacuum flucuate.

Not necessarily. What does ur car feel like at High RPMs? Mine was loosing power at right around 5800 RPM. It almost felt like i was getting valve-float.

I doubt it would throw a code unless it was really severe. Best bet is to get ur car scanned and see for sure.

Would it make like a LARGE ticking sound if the lifters are REALLY bad

hmmmm possibly. But are u sure ur Valves are lashed properly? that is more likely the reason for valvetrain noise.
