Unhappy .:bad EGR? how do I know?:.

well I took off the EGR Valve because of the recent problems I've been having..(long story) Basically after my Catalytic Converter split and eventually came off all together..Ive been having bad problems with any type of acceleration. It is literally like I have no power..the car stumbles very bady EVERY time..but is okay at idle and starts up just fine. Even after driving it to see what other symptoms i can gather..at a light or something it seems fine. When I attempt to apply any more than like what would be 20% throttle, it will stutter and have no power. Even at WOT it has a huge loss of power and I can feel it somewhat stumble alittle.
I replaced my Coil, checked all of the wires to the plugs and they arent burnt..I feel its too consistant of an RPM range to be the feul injectors..but maybe they are a possability too?! Basically Ive gotten nowhere in two weeks with it and would like to sell it for a motorcycle!! (not really..but I would like to have one again )
ANYWAYS..Since I removed the EGR Valve..wasnt TOO hard..had a makeshift magnetic mirror that helped (thanks shoebox for the idea)....but now what do I look for to know that its bad? All of the lines seem fine to it and the solenoid...but I dont have a Vaccum Pressure Gauge/pump to check the vaccum. The back-side of the EGR Valve is really really black and Charcoal like..the 'male' piece that goes into the intake (and also the squarish hole above that on the EGR Valve). So I wipped that down..I have also pushed on the inside of the EGR Valve to make sure its compressing okay, and it seems fine..I can feel the air push out of the little vaccum spout on top (front/top). What now? I know the symptoms of a bad EGR Valve are rough idle or stalling at idle..both of which do not occur (idle is fine). Another symptom that I dont have is actual stalling during acceleration. But..of the four main symptoms..I do have rough engine performance during (mostly) at light throttle..(usually though at normal acceleration).
Another long post guys, but I REALLY need to fix this. Im running 'catless' right now..the exhaust is exiting at the Y-pipe since my cat came off..could this be causing this? Would replacing the cat (roughly $225 installed at a muffler shop) fix this? I know thats the best place to start, but I dont have $225 to throw into it right now...Would bad plugs/wires (mine are way old I believe but have inspected and seemed fine a few months ago) do something like this and be consistant to the T during acceleration? Thanks guys, I wonder if Mustink guys have this many problems as the LT1s?? LOL

Red face Re: .:bad EGR? how do I know?:.

anyone?¿...pleh..
Well hopefully soon I'm takin the Z to a friends uncle who is certified and have him hook it up to his scanners and finally (hopefully) pinpoint the problem. But..before I put the EGR Valve back on tomorrow, I was hoping atleast SOME1 would know how to inspect the EGR itself..if you can at all..Im suprised no one here has had to deal with the EGR Valve.. oh well..hopefully the scanner finds the problem..and I hope its not expensive
I know no one here cares..but I'll post what was wrong so if anyone else had my same symptoms..I can give you insight as what may be 'your' problem ....
Derek thanks

Why dont you just block it off completly? Just get a block off plate from TPIS.com or from ebay.. look up LT1 block off.. somthing to that affect.. If you want to keep your egr valve intact ill send you my old one.. It was replaced under warranty then about 5000 miles later i took it off... 20 bucks plus shipping and its yours! make it an even 30..

whats the point of doing a 'block off' plate for the EGR system? it seems to me its a needed device..plus..those plates on that website dont look like they'd fit where the Vavle goes..they have like 6 or 8 bolt holes..the EGR Valve only has two..do you have to drill or does it go elsewhere on the engine?? The site didnt really explain the PURPOSE of the block off..just what it is and how much lol...its $12 by the way on the site..thanks, Derek

Question Re: .:bad EGR? how do I know?:.

now that i look at those..they actually just seem to be cosmetic..throttle body plates LOL what do those have to do with the EGR Valve system??

Re: .:bad EGR? how do I know?:.

When I was running open y-pipe. I noticed very odd problems as well. Such as a loss of accelleration and stumbling. Our cars like little back pressure in the picture. I understand that money is an issue. But trying to troubleshoot a problem when the system is not close to fully functional is not the best way to go about things. You know you're gonna have to fix the CAT at one point (weither it be the state trooper making you or vehicle inspections), so just get that out of the way first.

We dont have emissions in FL.. So I took mine off.. If you want it though, lemme know, the valve itself not the block plates. And I duno what your looking at with 8 bolt holes.. They only have two. .

Talking Re: .:bad EGR? how do I know?:.

first off..I think scoobysnax is right..im just going to put the CAT back on first..I actually believe it is whats causing my problems..I believe my O2 readings are so off from the excessive air coming in with the CAT off..it is leaning out my fuel or whatever and causing my computer to gradually lower its settings making it worse and worse. I feel I may be able to check it by disconnecting the negative terminal on the battery for about 10 min..reconnect it and run it...see if the problem even still persisting..is quite as bad. This may cause the ECM/PCM to be closer to its default settings. Otherwise..reguardless of the outcome of that test..I will save up..replace the CAT and see what happens.
I am over confident it is due to the CAT being non-existant lol. As for my EGR Valve..it seems perfectly fine..I still do not know what the purpose is countrymusic...so Im not sure that is something that would benefit me since I (YET!) do not have headers..(a friend mentioned that is when you would block it off??). And the "8bolt holes" I was referring to were the ones on the TPIS.com website..the picture it shows is of throttle body plates next to the EGR Block off description..it doesnt make sense..youd think they would post a pic of what they are selling
Anyways, recapping on the fact that it probobly wont be to my benefit to alter the EGR system right now..Ill pass on your offer..but thanks for your help Country and Scooby..Ill post when I find out this is whats wrong..

Hey Country, I'm from Hollywood, FL. Ever heard of a shop called R.A.C.E (Redline Automotive Competition Engines)? It's a shop down there in Davie (just off Orange Dr. I think) that does frigin great work. Check 'em out or refer some people down there. My stepfather had his 71 RS Camaro rebuilt there forged 350 bored to a 355. Absolutely spectacular and they'll sell your old engine for you. Sorry to jump in there, and this may be seen as advertising, but I see no profits from it. Just offering some advice.

before you get too far. Disconnect your O2 sensors. That will keep you in open loop and make your computer run on a predefined fuel map. Same as disconnecting your battery, but does not allow the PCM to "relearn"

So just literally disconnect the two (only two right?no post cat o2 on the 94s?) and run it for a bit? Then IF that is the problem..it should run normal again or what? What will I be looking for that should change? If thats the case it should run smoother again? Thanks Scooby..derek

Good stuff... yea man. I think Rich and Billy were running like high 9's or 10's in their rides last time I checked. I can't remember who's wife. But that Nova they built for her is frigin sweet.

And as far as the O2's. Yes it should run better. Not perfect and it may run rich, but you should see a change.

They have a black camaro now that runs like 8.94.. They are the ones who ported my cylinder heads and picked my cam.. I only went 12.87 but I was having some problems.. They took one of their old camaros and stripped it down and gave it to billys daughter, a friend of mine, Noka... Still pretty quick.. For my new motor I went with a crate motor from golen because RACE wanted like 3300 for everything golen gave me but no 4bolt main. Other wise i would have went with them.. boy they sure are pricey!!
