bad air pump

ses light is on; air fuse under hood(20amp)keeps blowing. This is on a '95T/A(OBD-1). If I unplug connecter at pump and install new fuse will the ses light stay off? For emissions check will my tailpipe emissions go up(without changing pump). Will disconnecting the battery for an instant erase the code from the computer? Lots of questions...lots of THANKS! Larry

Yes you can just replace the fuse and then unplug the pump and the SES light will go off and stay off. Its one of the many great things about having an OBD1 pcm. The air pump only runs for the first few mins when you start the car i believe to help warm the cat up, although i don't see how. As long as your car is warmed up when you take it to get emissions tested you should be fine. Disconnecting the battery will clear the code, but i don't really see a point. Unless you have a scanmaster then the code will show upm and maybe thats what bothers you. If you replace the fuse and unplug the pump before you start the car the SES light should go off.

Re: bad air pump

Irecently removed mine and took it apart. Motor was fine, but there's a solenoid valve on the outlet that was so corroded, it wouldn't move in its bore. A little PB Blaster and a few cycles by hand and it was fine.
Reassembled, reinstalled, no more blown fuses!

It is a pain to get it apart though.

Wrong gage wiring in the 95 to the air pump. This is a recall. Talk to chev.

Re: bad air pump

I remember reading the recall (actually a TSB) on the 95's. I don't remember anything about the wiring.
It basically said that condensation could enter the pump by getting past the check valves. This will cause corrosion of the pump internals and causes the fuse to blow.
The repair was to render the pump inoperable. They capped the inlet and outlet lines and removed the power. They said it wasn't needed anyway.
Here's the link:

I wish I could remove the one on my 94, but I don't think it will pass a visual inspection, which is still required on ODB I cars (in my area anyway).
