Awe crap.. ??? is up with the longer dowel pin?

Went to install my cc503 cam tonight and noticed that the dowel pin in the new cam is longer than the OEM cam. Will this work with my 95 Opti?

I Installed the cam..im sure hoping i dont have to pull it out and have the dowel pin changed..

Awe good god... I alread installed it into the motor.. im taking its not a good idea to tap on it while its installed right?

I didnt bolt it down so i guess no big deal in taking it out again.. Just dont want to put too much stress on the cam bearings.

Grind it down, but seal off everything so that you don't get filings in there. As much talk as there is about dowel pins, I am very surprised you did not know to check it. The cam install guide on my site specifically warns about this and has a pic.

don't tap it in the motor you will knock the plug out the back.....

If you bolt the retainer on and the timing gear it will hold it on the front of the block....

but its not a big deal to pull it back out...put on bolt in the timing gear on the cam opposite of the dowel and use that as a handle, pull it back out...no stress, the thing with cams is not to knick the breaings, just don't do that be careful.....

Rookie mistake. I guess i didnt do enough research. I dont have a grinder and probably wouldnt do it properly anyhow. Would tapping it in more work?

My lunati cams pin was out way to far also, seems to happen more often then not.

Yea i'll just slide it back out. Once its out, how do i know the dowel pin will go in any deeper? If its too long can I take it to a machine shop and have them grind it down?

My engine builder tapped it in.

If you do not tap it in to the same lenght as your stock cam, then it will eat your opti. You have to tap it in, or replace your opti every 10 miles.

and before you tap it in get something the same length as the stock pin and put it around the pin so you only tap it in that far and not more than you need to.

.620" is recommended length. I tapped one in as far as she would go once and then had to grind the tip a bit further to get it within specs. Yes, doing this preinstalled a heck of a lot easier. It would make a mess with the shavings.

Well.. removed the cam and hammer on it a bit and its in as far as its going to go. I guess the next step is to drop it off to a machine shop to either replace the pin or grind it down.. Darn. Well lesson learned.
