where do i cut the 1st gear blocking plate? which piece is it? I have some 3.42 gears coming next week.

 

should be a thick square rubber bump stop towards the 2nd gear side of the shifter. if so then cut the liittle rubber bump stop in half . if you dont have that rubber bump stop. just put the shifter in 2nd and see what is stopping it from going to first and eliminate/fix it. Hope this helps...........

Just pull the shifter plate off and pull the shifter down until it stops, you will see the plastic block. about 1/2" by 1/2"

 

Why did GM decide to block off first with cars with 2.73's?

 

Because they're stupid. Thats my best guess. I had to do the same thing, but since I got the converter I just leave it in drive all the time.

It was due to a noise requirement that was not met when the car was downshifted to 1st gear, so they just eliminated the ability to downshift it. Simple and cheap (and easily remedied ).


Would you rather they put on a more restrictive exhaust instead?

 

yeah i went to 3:73's what a difference.....have fun changing them though its REAL FUN..........

 

Why waste the time and energy to tear apart the console and cut something when all you have to do is yank back really hard? It works in mine.

Anyways, shoebox, you can shift into first with 3.23 gears correct? So is first gear with 2.73's alot louder than first gear with 3.23's? I am stumped lol

 

why would they do it in the 2.73 cars? wouldnt the 3.23 cars go through 1st faster?
