94 A4 TA, 86K on it, fluid and filter changed at 80K. When you start it up cold, and put it in gear, it is shifting VERY hard, the 1-2 shift is also VERY hard, this will continue until you restart the car and it is warm, then everything is ok. Checked the fluid and it is full and doesn't smell burnt or anything.

Any ideas? It can't be good for it to be shifting this hard.

 

Have the PCM scanned for codes. Some will set but not light the Check Engine Light. If a trans. code is set then the PCM may max the line pressure. This will give you harsh park to drive or reverse engagements and most noticeably a harsh 1-2 shift.

 

mines so harsh that I chirp the tires under normal driving, lol
