Auto meter Tach, which wires go to what?

I have an auto meter tach that im going to be installing in my 96 Trans Am, I had it in another LT1 before but i can't remember which color wires from the gauge need to be hooked up to the car to have it work properly. The meter has Black, White, Green and Red wires. The black im assuming goes to a ground, but as for the rest and most of all the the wire that connects to the PCM i have no clue. Can anyone help? Thanks

Re: Auto meter Tach, which wires go to what?

did some additional searching and from the tach the wires are

Green- to negative side of coil or to tach output on electronic ignition ( im guessing this goes to the input wire from the PCM)

White- is the power for the light (i can manage this one)

Red- goes to the ignition switch

Black- ground (i got this one aswell)

I can figure out the white and black wires just fine. But which wire from the car can i hook up the green wire from the Tach? Also which wire from the car is a good wire for the red wire from the tach?

Thanks for any help!

Black is the ground.
Red goes to a fused & switched power feed.
White goes to the dash light circuit.
The green wire should be connected to the tac output signal from the PCM (pin A13).

Thanks 97WS6SCharged, Is there a picture of the pin A13 to where i need to make the connection with the green wire? I would need something of the same to for the ignition switch as well, I don't claim to know very much about wires so I nearly need to be spoon fed this kinda stuff. Thanks

You can tap into the tach wire here.

You can run your power wire to a spare terminal in the fuse panel marked IGN.

Re: Auto meter Tach, which wires go to what?

ok so i installed my auto meter tach at the white wire in terminal D as depicted in shbox's photo but when i started my car the tach reads WAY off. It reads 800rpm high at idle and at 3000rpm's it reads at 6k! what could be the problem?

Did you take the tach apart and flip the tiny switches to adjust it to read an 8 cylinder signal? usually autometer tachs can be used with 4, 6, and 8 cylinder engines but need to be adjusted for it.

I have heard about that switch however I looked at my gauge and it appears to be a solid unit. How would I disassemble it?
