Arcing At Coil
Arcing At Coil
Okay, I started to hesitate and stumble so I tried to figure out what was going on. I looked at night, and boom, there it was. The little "square" metal cage that runs around the coil (this wraps around the plastic part like a "cage".) well this part had an arc on both sides as if to fill in the gap between that "cage" and the plastic part of the coil.
So I went to Advance, bought a coil and expected that to work. It didn't. So should I buy the ignition module? It is 80 bucks compared to 15 for the coil so I don't want to do that if it isn't going to work. What do you think?

Make sure the coil is grounded well. Be sure you have the braided ground strap from the coil stud to the chassis. Check your coil wire with an ohmmeter to be sure the resistance has not gotten way high. Check for corrosion on any terminals on the coil.
if its grounding out replace the module and make sure you use the dielectric grease on it and don't touch it with your fingers or it will lose its conductivity. If it is not the module you have an electric demon in your car
I bet the coil is just fine, its your coil wire thats causing you problems. Last fall my car would stumble down low and run rough. I opened the hood with the car running and I saw something arching by the coil. Yanked the wire off and I was suprised it was even running. The wire was all ashes on the inside of the wiring. Go get a new coil wire and see if that cures it.
another thing I've heard is if the coil to distributor wire gets too hot it will stumble. This happens with the ghetto wires aquired from Parts America unless you have a heat shield around it, and the boots. Even the cheap plastic wireloom conduit might help in this instance.
