anyway possible to stop rear gear noise?

I've got 3.73's in my 97 z and also had them in my 93 Z, both of which are GM Motive brand. Is there anyway possible i can get them to have no whine? My mechanic says tat this ring+pinion was an almost perfect fit...but the still whine like a b*tch! its normal, i know, but it gets annoying. i've had these gears for about 6 months now and even though i'm use to the sound, anyone and everyoe who rides in my car thinks that its junk or something is wrong. that gets old, but i dont really care what they think. i just want that friggin noise GONE! anyone know if it can be rid of?

The easiest thing you can do is change out your rearend fluid and remember to add posi additive. If that does not fix anything that your gears were not setup properly. Do you know by any chance what backlash the gear was set to? The only gears that I have heard with an awful whine are Richmond gears. Everything else when setup properly should not whine.

When we installed my Strange gear the callout for backlash was between .008 and .012. I set mine up for .010 backlash and never had a problem with whine.

i have Richmond 3.73s and they only whine slightly above 55mph

i was rear-ended in 2002 and the gears went in in 2003. they whined loud, could even hear it above the stereo. then a friggin tourist rear-ended me at the end of 2003, and after they fixed it, the whine was almost gone! i think something was touching or transmitting the noise. it's like half as loud as it was.

GM motive is supposed to be quiet. try Redline Heavy Shockproof

Sometimes you may need to use 2 bottles of the limited slip additive if your running a posi unit, im pretty sure that is why yours is whining if you do indeed have the correct back lash.

go to autozone and buy some stuff called "whale oil" it stinks to high heaven. but it'll stop that noise.
