Anything special to tell the machine shop tomorrow???
Anything special to tell the machine shop tomorrow???
I am taking my LT1 heads in tomorrow to the machine shop to have them machined to fit the Comp 987 dual valve springs for my CC306 cam install. Anything special I need to tell them? I told them I needed them machined for the valve springs, will they just know what to grind them to? Also, is there a optimal heighth that is needed when the valve springs are installed?
I guess, if you guys can think of anything I need to tell them, I would appreciate it.

don't take them to the machine shop, just grind the corner of the locator yourself and install them.

Re: Anything special to tell the machine shop tomorrow???
You pulled your heads JUST to get the seats machined to accept the 987s!?!? Man that is a lot of work for something that isnt even necessary. All you have to do is grind on the locators at little. The springs are not the problem... its the oversized locators. But since you have the heads off you may as well get them ported and tell teh machine shop the locators are 1.5" in diameter.

magnaflux is cheap insurance. Also have them check the valve guides. If they hot tank the heads they will look like brand new..easy way to clean/degrease and its very cheap.

Here is a pic of the locator/seat. http://www.vthunder.com/base/images/...s/VT4770-4.gif
Just put the 987 seats on the head and you will see the little bump that sticks out and the seats catch on. Just notch that corner of the seat until the seat fits flush on the head. Then put the spring on. The seats are way larger than the 987 springs and thats why you won't have any problems.

Re: Anything special to tell the machine shop tomorrow???
TexasTA i posted in your last thread that you didn't need to pull the heads to install these springs. http://web.camaross.com/forums/showthread.php?t=313939
Did you decide to get your heads ported?

Yeah, I decided to port them. but aren't those retainers that you showed in teh pictures? Maybe that is just the retainers other name, locators.
Thanks
Thanks

Installed spring height is critical. read the manufacturer's recommendation and stick to that. You may need shims on hand, and a spring height checker as well, with your retainers and locks.
