I am so sick and tired of dealing with this made by the lowest bidder opti-spark distrbutor. If anyone can tell me of alternative distributor set-up I would be greatful. I am looking for a set-up like the one in the latest issue of GM high tech. This guy is using a small base MSD distributor and some sort of magnetic trigger. Also if anyone is running a different set-up if you could give a price. Thanks

 

Hey, you are gonna need a crank trigger regardless of your setup(unless you are going with a carb.) and to fabricate this is a pain. Setups like this can run easily $800. You could convert to coil packs with a crank trigger and enough money. There is a billet optispark that is supposed to be badass for like $600 i think? Do a search for it and you will find a link somewhere. If your reason behind a new setup is not to rev past 7000 i would suggest that billet opti, of course if you can change an opti then i personally would go through 2 or 3 instead of spending $900 all at once. The cool factor and easy design of coil pack per cylinder setup is mighty tempting though. Hope this helps a little!! Later

 

There are a couple of choices:

You can search on LTCC to find a reference to a kit that uses the opti for the PCM, and uses individual coils on the valve covers like the LS1. In fact, you use LS1 coils on this setup. Bailey Engineering makes them. There is a thread that describes this in detail. It is apparently a very good system and nearly bullet-proof.

Dyno-Tech Engineering makes the billet opti called the Dynaspark. I have one. It is a very high quality piece, well sealed, and internally balanced. It's expensive, but if you don't want to change your opti out, this will probably last.
