So I'm refabbing the true dual setup and I'm using car chemistry collector inserts instead of mufflers. Then I get to looking at the underside of the car and it looks like I'd save so much time and effort if I just brought the pipes toghether in to an x and then dumped them just under the door - the front of the door where the subframes are welded on.
Well, I like the car loud but not excrutiating loud. I feel like having the exhuast not dump under the car will make all the difference but others have said that the length of pipe is what makes all the difference and having it dump right under the front of the doors (as opposed to the back which is what I was originally considering) doesn't help.
Is this car going to make me deaf? Opinions?

I used to have AS&M headers and a 3" dual exhaust setup that exited like a cutout would on a single exhaust car... two pipes turned out right under the passenger seat. X pipe and 2 3" bullets were stuffed where the cats used to be, overall a pretty compact setup. One way or another, it was freakin LOUD! Inside the car every single thing would buzz or rattle. The vibrations were horrible, and you seriously could not have a convo with the person sitting next to you. It was just too much.
Mine is side exit, just before the back tire. It's lounder that most people would like (my wife, for instance). Fine for me though.
I do admit, it would be a bit too much noise on a long trip without earplugs, but for weekend cruising and trips across town it's fine. A few people have mistakenly thought my car was running open headers though... Been running the setup for close to a year now and have yet to be pulled over, but I do get out of the throttle near police.
I believe the only muffler that would actually be louder is something with a straight through design like a dynomax bullet.
FYI - the inserts do restrict the exhaust a little though. Last time at the track, I dropped 2 tenths and picked up 1 mph when I opened the cutouts and bypassed the carchemistry insert mufflers. (I'm running my inserts just behind the cutouts, instead of in the header collectors)

I had true dual 3 inch with h-pipe and dynomax race bulits dumping at the axles with groty long tubes and a cam.. It was LOUD, but i loved it. I am stuck with open hooker longe tubes right now and it puts the true dual set up to shame.. I can't stand the open long tubes though.

I was using a true dual setup that used an x right at the ds and then ran 30" long glasspacks to the axle where they just ended. This was loud but I liked it, infact it could have been louder. It did drone some right at 2000 rpm which made interestate driving a nuisance sometimes. The drone and the lack of ground clearance were my only complaints.
I feel like I could get rid of a lot of the drone and vibration by simply having the exhaust exit outside of the car rather than underneath. I'm looking at two approaches.
One approach would be to use an x and then route the pipes down alonge the tunnel and then bend them out toward the rear wheels and have them exit right under the lca mounting point on the body BUT I think I'll have severe clearance problems with the 3" pipe under the lca mouning point and I don't have the money for oval piping. So the big problem here is ground clearance.
The second approach would be to connect the two headers at the ds and then have them turn and exit right under the middle of the door - the pipes would not go down the tunnel. It would look kinda like: --U-- with the U being the x and the dashes being the exit at the sides of the car. I know that's probably as clear as mud. But the ground clearance would be excellent, it would be ultra light weight, and easy to weld up. The big problem here is the loudness. The tips would be about a foot and a half farther forward then they would with the other setup.
Really, the big questions are, will 5 more feet of pipe really tone down the exhaust much? Will it make a big difference having the exhaust exit at the back of the door as compared to the middle?

There's room to clearence 3" pipe in front of the back wheels. You dont need to buy oval pipe - you can oval pipe in a vise.

I know the ol' welds have been around forever, and most people go for some type of star now. I just have a soft spot for cowl hoods, 383s, and dem old draglights. Reminds me of cruisin around in my dads old 62 nova back in the 80's.

Actually the only ovaling I did was at and near the tip, to clear my frame connectors, which hang fairly low (as far as frame connectors go). If I remember correctly though, I think my pipe exits just behind the eye of the lca, not directly under it. Piping hasnt interfered with lca travel though. I'll take a closer look this evening.
