Anyone in here ever throw a rod?
Last night, after the bearing changes, we cranked her up and it had the same noise. We reved her some and all of the sudden..
bammmmm clunk nothing, the engine died and we heard a dripping from underneath, yeahhh, a big hole in the oil pan and a little piece of metal prolly 1" in diameter on the ground. Do you think I broke a piston? What do I do now? Pull the oil pan again and see where or which side it came from and pull that head and replace that piston? I am on a budget and cant afford to do all new pistons, so will I be ok to replace this one if thats the problem? Any input would be very helpful!
Thanks,
Mike

Yea, thats what it sounds like. Sound slike you theough a rod. Go ahead and drain the oil and im pretty sure your going to find all kinds of nice shiny peices of your motor in there. You can get a replacment rod just like you cna get a replace ment piston as well. How many miles ar on your motor?, if its reletively high than I would go ahead and do a budget build and refresh the motor. Good luck
maybe you installed a bearing backwards? You didnt break a piston but probably a rod and hopefully not a main cap. I suppose it really doesnt matter though b/c you will have to pull the motor out now and rebuild or replace it.

Cant I just replace whatever was broke? The metal that came out was a very light piece of metal, arent the mains heavy? Where and how much is a rebuild kit?

If you threw a rod you probably messed up the crank too. You will probably need a new crank. Sounds like you just need to pull the motor out and check everything out. Sometimes a thrown rod will come up and break the camshaft also.
