Anyone ever shelled an oil pump drive gear?

I just recently bought a 94 z28 with a rebuilt motor. it has an aftermarket style cam and whenever the engine speed would change a strange whining could be heard from the engine, it wasn't very loud barely noticeable. 500 miles later i suddenly lost oil pressure. Is this my problem? please respond I just got my car and am not very familiar with it yet so any advice is welcome!

From what I've seen, the most common cause of that is an HP/HV oil pump. There is extra stess on the gears as a result of that. Do you know if it has an HP/HV oil pump?

Ive sheared mine before. I have a high volume/pressure pump with a LT4 hotcam. I sheared it during the winter while it was -35 outside(Alaska.) The drive unit had about 110k miles on it. Youll have to go to the dealership to get a ne one for bout $50.

i believe that it is just a standard pump b/c the pan is the same. however the car has 110 thousand miles maybe the guy who rebuilt it didn't replace the gear

Did it hurt your cam when it sheared?

The original pan makes no difference. You can still put the higher volume pump in and keep the original pan. What pressure were you seeing at cold start up?

Re: Anyone ever shelled an oil pump drive gear?

the engine never regained any oil pressure at all

i had the pan loose to check the oil pump and the drive shaft could be turned about 1/4 turn by hand i'm taking that as a bad sign... but i really don't know i'm a beginner at working on my LT1

as to what the oil pump is hp/hv i really can't tell you but whatever it is it isn't pumping oil
