Lightbulb anyone ever put a STOCK MUFFLER on a Heads/Cam/Longtube car? (video clip inside)

Right now i have a flowmaster catbackon my FLP / heads / cam car and its prettttttty loud .. louder than most of my friends cars with their cutout open .... im making myself a DUAL cutout with dual DMH butterflies to go in the FLP setup (replace the OR pipe section) using V clamps so i can switch them for my cats with ease

i was also thinking about slapping a stock muffler back on my catback (not running cats), wondering how that would sound ... would be nice and quiet (sleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeper) or would it sound like a$$ due to the extra exh flow !?

i just love the idea of going from DEAD quiet to earth-shattering loudness in 5 seconds

ps. heres a video clip of my car ideling with open headers ... taken just after i re-installed the FLPs from getting re-coated.

Who re-coated your FLPs? I called FLP and I dont think I want their guys to do it so I was thinking of having Jet-hot do them.

What the hell are you pointing at with the camera after you fire it up? Sounds good. I dunno how it would sound with stock mufflers, but there's a first for everything.

KC: i sent them back to FLPs coaters (their called, umm .. i fergot.. i'll post their url when i remember ) but i got mine done under warranty ... they didnt do the greatest job though they didnt sand down my headers and u can still see the rust patterns under the new coat ... oh well it was free !!

LS1: i kinda just pointed the camera to the undercarriage .. looking at the collectors ... cant see much though .. mainly for the sound ...

Instead of using a stock muffler, why not put on a Dynomax or Magnaflow muffler. Those two are quiet and they'll flow much better than the stock muffler.

The stock muffler would be much quieter than what you have. It wouldn't be as quiet as a stock car though. With your mods, I would be a little concerned with air rush through the stock muffler at higher RPMs. The OEM muffler was designed to give the best sound possible while still making it past a federal noise test procedure. It was also designed for stock horsepower levels. Putting it on a higher output car will work, and it will sound decent at lower RPMs, but you might hear some rush at higher RPMs. The additional restriction will hurt horsepower, but that's what you've got cutouts for, right? It would work.

That sound of open headers is familiar, I did the same thing myself. Did you try installing the cats on the end of the headers and then starting it? You will be surprised how much the cats quiet it down, they are like mufflers themselves. I drove it this way to the muffler shop, some cop drove by me and didn't do a thing. A stock muffler will be too restrictive. The best bet would probably be a flowmaster, but not the crossflow 80 series, maybe the 50 series big block delta muffler. I have 2 magnaflow mufflers, they are straight thru like borla, it sounds great, very bassy, but on the verge of too loud for a street car. Every once in awhile, my engine sets off car alarms.

Mmmm.... Lets see, your gonna help your car breath with the headers, go through the significant hassle of installing headers. I'm sure you know how easy it is to work on these cars especially in that area. Then your're considering "choking" it back off with stock mufflers. Isn't that like taking a shower with a raincoat on?

I've got the setup your going to, almost.

Hooker LTs, dual 3" cutouts with DMH dealies, 3" cat back, with a Flowmaster. Its just perfect for me loudness-wise with the Flowmaster. Then I hit the button when I want to be obnoxious.

A good friend of dad's has a 76 Stingray with a built 350 making 390-400hp through the stock muffler and no cats and LT's. I haven't heard it above 3krpm as it isn't quite broken in yet, but I think it sounds like *** as far as exhaust tone goes. It has none of that basso rumble resonation you get at idle from a 2 chamber flowmaster or other low restriction mufflers. It definitely sounds out of place with a big lope and not much rumble. But as soon as he gets the money this will change.
