Anyone else breaking starters?

I just had to replace my stock style starter in my 95 for the 2nd time in 3 years...On both occasions the starter housing cracked, the long bolt got bent, and the ear broke off where the short bolt goes...This time it was replaced under warranty, and they were both from different companies. The first one was a new GM LT1 and the second was a reman...I don't think 11.2:1 is too high for the starter, but maybe it is? Anyone else had this problem? Is it time to go to an aftermarket high torque unit? I don't see too many threads about busted starters...just asking...

I have broke 2. Once my opti was bad and it backfired through the intake and I guess it loaded up and fired. Both times it blew the housing to pieces. The factory starter is a high torque started. I believe alot of people are using the LT4 starter since itis cheaper.

Ive seen 12:1 motors crack stock style starters like they were candy. so i would get a good mini starter. thats just my input.

i cracked the stock one and bought the lt4 starter really good upgrade and it sounds so much better. makes a sound like it was not designed in the 60's and really not bad on the wallet.

Re: Anyone else breaking starters?

Thanks everyone...I'm looking into going to a small, high torque starter, but need to see what will clear Kooks stepped LTs...The stock comes in and out very easy with the Kooks...Just have to see what fits..Anyone running an aftermarket starter with Kooks LTs?

Re: Anyone else breaking starters?

The only starter I ever had physically break was because of a bent flex plate. May be worth looking into.

FWIW, I have a PM9500 for my S10. Anyhow, it fit around my Kooks stepped race headers when I had them on the engine stand. I didn't try it in the car though.
