Anyone dropped their transmission without help or a trans. jack?
I am in the process of replacing the clutch, and wondering how difficult it is to drop a T-56 without assistance from someone else or a transmission jack. I have an adapter for my floor jack, but there is not enough clearance to use it while the car is on jackstands. Is it possible to balance it on a floor jack without the adapter? Any suggestions would be appreciated.
It's doable... me and a friend of mine lowered our trannies with two jacks. It took a couple times to get it perfect but you just get one jack on the front and one on the back and lower them at the same time.
A trans jack is not necessary. I have had mine out 3 times and only used 1 floor jack. (Like you, I bought an adapter for my floor jack and found out it wouldn't fit under the car. I think the only thing one would work on is a truck!) I would recommend having another person help you. The last time I took mine out, I had my wife run the jack while I did the maneuvering.
I did an m-6 twice alone. I built a jig out of 2 2x4's and a piece of plywood that put each of the 2 x 4'sw on either side of the transmission at the bottom. I use a floor jack under that and put a small ratchet strap around the jig and the trans to hold it. I had the car up higher than I could with stands. I mortared two concrete blocks together and had two pcs of 2 x 4 on top of each one and it was just about right. that reminds me I need to do it again. Damn clutch-and I don't even race.

Now can say I have blood (10'' cut down my spine- bled through 2 shirts), sweat (you want to gut an LT1 in june?) and tears ( something fell on my face, hit my nose and made me tear)
the M6's are easy by yourself as long as you don't have a mufflex ypipe and a spohn torque arm..
best bet is to use 2 peopel but i have done mine by myself w/o any negative results other then some offended neighbor's

Its not that hard, all you do us get your chest under it and slide it back of the torque converter or off the crossmember and let it lay down on your chest, but you have to have the car up high enough so that you can slide it off of you onto the floor. Now i know you think its heavy and all but it really isnt you just gotta do it. but a jack will work too

I have never done an m6 but I have done several mustangs and that's all I do...As long as you don't DROP it on yourself, they really aren't that heavy....But a jack is handy when doing the reinstall....

I agree. The wife comes in handy when doing this, plus she likes to help out with the car. Have done it many times by myself. This resulted in me saying every cus word in the book, but I got the job done.

I've had the 4L60-E out of my brother's stroked formula twice with just the assistance of a floor jack. It is handy having someone with some mechanical backround running the jack. Saves a lot of swearing and possible other injuries to yourself and your 4L60-E
