For someone that seems to know everything your asking is it possible to change the heads w/motor in car.

Yes it is possible and you could easily do this in a weekend. Have fun!

I think most people leave the short block in the car.

Man common sense would tell you it's gonna be a PITA! I guess I'm always quick to assume that when someone has a built engine as yours, they would not ask these questions. I guess you had someone do all the work for you???

Actually doing the heads while the motor is in car is fairly easy..You learn the tricks after youve done it 4 times

When I put the heads on my 383 on the engine stand it took me 30mins to put both heads on and torque them down..

Exactly, putting the heads on is the easy part, but its the sh*t that you have to take off to get to the heads that makes it a PITA......IMO.

Busted knuckles? Only while removing the headers.

Once getting to the heads, the operation is rather painless

I think changing heads is a cake-walk. Hell, I'll remove heads when I'm bored and decided to do a little more work on them

For a first timer it might take a little while but once you have the basics down it's easy.

why would i build my motor and then put heads when its int he car

stuff goes on so easy when the motor is out.
i'm not asking how to do it, or what head gaskets
i'm asking how much of a pain in the *** it is!

for the record-
i pulled the motor and every accessory in my driveway
took the car to my friends dad shop where he taught me how to assembly a bottom end. we encountered many problems due to a ****ty machine shop. finally i had to go to school and they finished it for me.

It sounds like you should have no problems. It involves no real skill or precision work. You remove some fasteners, pull the parts off, put parts on, and bolt everything down. Some minor snags like the coolant crossover, getting to the power steering pump's bolt, etc., but nothing to fret about.

Damn bro chill out.......I was just making a comment. I'm far from being an LT1 god! I was just puzzled that someone that has a 383 would ask how much of a PITA it is the swap heads while the engine is in the car. I could look at my engine for few minutes and pretty much know how much as a PITA it's gonna be to swap the heads.

I knew I was gonna get flamed for my comments but I just thought it was a stupid thread. Hell I see you making very techinal comments about other things, then you post this thread.

I really was suprised at who it was asking the question when I opened the thread.

Trey - I done it both ways, once while the motor was in the car and with the motor out of the car (K-Member in all)

I have to admit the pull motor from bottom is a lot easier to do.
I guess I'm getting older and I just hate bending over to work on the motor especially the heads.

About time that you are going to do it, that's all we have been hearing lately, good luck.
