Just wondering if anyone is using one of this series cams. I spoke with a guy at Comp Cams today over the phone about what to pair up with my setup. He was telling me I should try one of the XFI series cams. The one he suggested specs out at 230/236 @.050, .576" intake/.570" exhaust on 113*. He was explaining to me that this cam is very similar to a custom grind they used to use a lot (although that sounds a little contradictory I understand), so often in fact that they just slapped a part # on it and are stocking it.

The guy who is building my motor and I have been playing around with some Engine Analyzer Pro software to get a guesstimate of what I'd make. We were surprised to see that changing cam specs really did not make much of a difference in power- IE going from a basic HOTcam profile to a 230/230 in the .560" range on 114 only made an extra 15 hp. The guy at Comp said that the software we were using doesn't really compensate well for the flow characteristics of the LT1 intake manifold- therefore in his experience the real world numbers compared to the numbers that program spits out have always been better.

So I guess what I'm asking is from the experienced cam guys- what do you think about the XFI cam specs that I listed above? Also for anyone, let me know if you're running this series cam and how you like it. Apparently it's only been out for 4 months or so, so I'm not expecting many people to have one.....

Setup- 1995 Z28- Forged 355, 11:1 compression, homeported heads (will give flow numbers on request), all supporting mods, stalled automatic....

Well I'll be damned... what are the specs on that thing?

I'm honestly surprised someone still produces "New" technology for an engine such at the LT-1

I guess they have a few different ones, but the specs that guy recommended for me were 230/236 .576"/.570 on a 113*. Pretty healthy cam, I wonder what it would do in my car.

The hot rodders are retrofitting LT1s in alot of stuff, I like it cause it drives the market.

I've used the XFI lobes, they work pretty dam well.

It's not a bad cam.... what I can say is the EA Pro shows you a lot of trends but you see more gains when the parts are installed in the motors.

That's good to hear. The Engine Analyzer Pro had me kind of worried, and even left my engine builder kind of scratching his head.

Well I suppose I'll give one of these XFI cams a try in my motor. I'd still be interested in going with a custom cam, however everyone seems to tell me that going custom will only be marginally better. I have not ordered anything yet, so if anyone has some input I'd like to hear it before I finalize things.

Shoot me a e-mail.... I have some interesting comparisons of custom cams on pretty equal setups and it might suprise you....

From what I have seen no shelf cam out there really matches the average power you get from the proper camshaft. They all are flawed in many ways.

Email on the way.... One thing I forgot to add, I'll be limited to .575 lift because of the rockers I'm using.

Put that cam in EAP on a 108+4 ICL and see. Ya really want to see a differance lengthen the intake runners to 4.25-5".Choosing the correct intake is not possible because it isn't in the program.

If ya don't go custom ya are leaving some on the table. And a custom from someone that knows what it takes, not just a salesman.

Crower,Bauer Racing,Isky,Reed, most all the cam makers do custom, the trick is to talk to the right people to get the right custom grind for your set up and not just a salesman. The people who know about engine combos don't answer the phone and ya have to have some idea who they are to ask for them.
