Good to know, just heard it so many times on here I thought it was true.

So its not the opti that cannot handle high rpms, its the pcm?

 

It's kinda wird that I have a 96 and never had any of these problems and it's not as much as a pain to change as you guys say. I will not argue that coil pack per cylinder is better but you won't get very much more HP from it.

 

I personally find nothing wrong with the opti spark system. I don't own a fourthgen so its not difficutl for me to replace mine. It takes me 10 minutes to take it off the car and 15 to put it back and replace the coolant. I have never had one go bad on me and its not expensive as it once was due to O'reilly's and autozone both carrying lifetime warranties on the distributor and cap/rotor.

I just bought and installed the delteq stage 1.

I inquired about the stage 2. Jim from delteq said it was "in developement" and did not want to disclose any further info.

I talked to Pele, at delteq last week. He stated the same thing. He also wasn't sure when it was going to be ready.
When I talked to him back in dec, he stated that, he though in might be ready in march. March is here and no stage 2. Oh well, I guess we will have to keep praying to the opti gods.

 

how can one diagnose what part of an opti is screwing up? I read somewhere where the optical portion very rarley fails....what could cause a miss in a car at various rpm? Arching, cap rotor? Optical sensor?

 

Do the simple stuff 1st like checking your plug wires.

How many braincells will take the GM Engineers to replace the rusting opticall wheel with some metal like..... Stainless Steel? No wait. if they made the opty spark of long lasting materials then revenue from Parts sales and Repairs would go down.... GM stock would dive and more Jobs would have to be outsourced to India and whatever Less than minimum wage paying country is outhere. No Wait again.... arent they doing that yet?

Someone in the Goverment figured that if we allowed US jobs to be shipped overseas........ All those Blue Collar Furloghed employees will have more spending money to improve the US economy and The US would not depend on any foreign country for anything.

Back to LT1's I like the Magnetic pick-up wheel idea a whole lot. I would use it to fire One coil per cylinder and I would seal the Opty to make it water proof etc. Oh lets not forget.... replace those Opty ball bearings with some "real" ball bearings. Heck if I was an engineer I would have probably just added some extra teeth to the Camshaft sprocket and then insert an Easily replaceable Cranckshaft position sensor that was held with just one screw and a good rubber or other good material seal onto the Timing cover and fire all the coils that way. Do away with the Opty altogheter.
