any suggestions on a not too obnoxious muffler?
any suggestions on a not too obnoxious muffler?
I recently got done with my hooker long tubes, no cats, using the same magnaflow muffler as before and the car is just gonna be attracting too much attention. I do love the way it sounds, but i dont need it being so easy for law enforcement to come find me whenever they hear me open it up on the streets. Any suggestions on a good sounding muffler that will quiet my car down a little bit? I do have an electric cutout so if i wanted to get nasty I have that option. I think you guys know what i mean. thanks
I'd be interested in this as well, I just had my cats removed and the SLP muffler is ok, but not great. The tone is little to high pitched, not the deep rumble I was looking for. Current setup is extrude honed manifolds (part of LT4 package), stock y-pipe with no cats, and SLP dual/dual cat-back.
Another vote for Dynomax here. I have the 3" Ulraflow with dual outlets. Nice low rumble at idle and screams at high RPM's without sounding obnoxiously raspy. It also doesn't just sound good it performs too. I forgot what aftermarket muffler the car had on it when I bought it but the car felt better after switching to the dynomax.
What kind of tips do you want out the back? I'm not 100% positive, but I'm pretty sure the ultraflow is only availible with 2 tips coming out on the drivers side, like the SLP 2OTL system. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.
If you want split tips you may want to look into the Hooker or Magnaflow. Hooker is a bit deeper, Magnaflow raspier. Both are good choices though, quiet at idle, make noise when you step on them.

. you can get it with the dual outlet on either side. i'm pretty sure that the dynomax and magnaflow are the same muffler.

Ultraflow Pic
The muffler number is 17276 if you are curious.
thanks for the replies guys, i'll look into the dynomax since my local Mufflex shop didnt even mention it. They said either a spintech or borla would work nicely, with the spintech being a little quieter and the borla being a decent amount quieter.
Ok, I found a good solution. The local shop where I have all my work done suggested putting a 12" long resonator inline in the intermediate pipe before the axle. This will reduce the volume a little bit and also make the tone deeper. It's basically the exact same thing as these:

The best part was it was only $35 for the part. I'd recommend trying a 12" unit (if you can find a local shop that has them), and if that isn't enough then you could swap to a 18" or 24" unit, but I bet it'll do exactly what you want.
My car with both cats removed now sounds almost like stock at idle and part throttle, but it really wakes up at full throttle. If anything, it's actually quieter than I wanted at idle and cruising.
