Any reason why I should just take the thermostat out this summer?

I have the 160 degree stat in and pcmforless.com tunning to kick the fan on early, but im wondering why not just yank the sucker out this summer...seems like it might help to keep the car from warming up as fast in the staging lanes.

It can have the opposite effect. The function of the thermostat helps route coolant to and from the radiator by opening or closing certain passages in the water pump. Don't confuse it's operation with an old SBC thermostat that was placed in the intake manifold.

Another thing to take into consideration is that it slows down the flow rate of the coolant. So even though its "unrestricted" it commonly allows coolant to move so fast that it dosen't have a chance to transfer any head from the motor to the coolant and then be cool by the radator.

Agree, definitely do not do this. The coolant needs some residence time in the radiator so that the heat transfer can occur. Without the thermostat, hot coolant will just flow into and out of the radiator and your car will overheat even worse.

Another option that people do is to drill a couple of small holes so that some amount of coolant is flowing always but slowly.

good luck
