Any helpful pages on changing head gaskets?

My friend just lost his job so he said he would help me out, so if my dad will let me keep the car in the barn for a bit, i'm good to go starting to get the work done. Any tips are greatly appreciated. I do know that some of you recommend dropping the cradle, but idk if we will have the tools available to do that. Is it that much harder to do it from the top? thanks.

I've done it many times from the top. It is a pain in the *** either way and is time consuming. I'd recommend changine them from the top.

I do not know much about cars but I recently changed my head gaskets and the only hard part is fitting your hand in all of the tiny places (especially if you are over 6 foot)
Remember to label all of the wires and hoses to simplify the reassembly.

The passenger side is really going to be a pain in the *** so I would do that side first (while you are still motivated)

It really isnt that hard. Its sounds more intimidating than it actually is.

Get a haynes maual and follow that. you should not have a problem.

definetly get a manual....haynes or chiltons or better yet a helms. You need to know torque specs and sequences for the heads and intake. Be sure to replace the head bolts and all gaskets. Do what blacknwhite95Z said and label all wires so nothing gets missed or overlooked. You can leave the fuel rail on, just disconnect the fuel lines from the back of it. You can also leave the throttle body on. Just take your time and make sure everything is done right. It really is easier than it looks, just aggrivating sometimes.

The best tip that i can give you firsthand is to clean the h-e- double hockey sticks out of the deck surface and the deck of the heads or you will be doing it more than once!!

Re: Any helpful pages on changing head gaskets?

Would like more info on this also. So the fuel rails do not need to come off? What about the fuel lines, I am having trouble disconnecting them, haynes said their is a special tool for this? Is there a way around this or where can I pickup this "tool". Their's six bolts on each side of the intake, is there any special care needed when taking these out? I know they need to be torqued correctly when going back in, but wasn't sure about removal.
