Any advantages to oil temp gauge

Hey all,

I wondered what is gained by knowing oil temp information on a road racing car? I am able to put it in for some effort but don't want to make it a priority unless someone can give me a very good reason. It would be digital just like my oil pressure and water temp and would be adjustable to flash if above a certain temp.

For one thing, it can tell you if you need an oil cooler or not. Non-synthetics shouldn't go over about 240 deg. F. A sudden spike in oil temperature can also alert you to the fact that you are low on oil before pressure is ever an issue.

Personally I wouldn't consider road racing without one. Depending on the track, most LT1/4 cars get close to 300* pretty quick on a stock or lightly modded motor and synthetic.
