Another Setting Valve Lash Question?

Ok, i have read shoeboxs text page about this and is says to stop when you begin to feel drag. So i did that this weekend atleast i thought i did but when i fired it up they were clicking like crazy. So i turned the car off pulled the valve covers. When i got the drivers side off i was very surprised to see that one of the rockers came clean off the push rod. So i put it back on tightened them all up another 1/4 turn because i did 1/2 turn and shoebox say 1/2 to 3/4 turn for preload. because i thought that could be why they were clicking. So i put eveything back on and fired it up again to hear more clicking. Let it run for 5 mins and when i went to shut it off i heard "clunk" and the car turned off. So at this point i'm pretty P OFF. Pull the valve covers to find the same rocker feel off, looked at it after i pulled it off and found that it must of got screwed up the first time it fell off because where the bearing is, there is the rim around that part and that was messed up.
So let me back up a bit when i was setting valve lash i set the #1 piston to tdc i did this by pulling the spark plug and watching the lifters. Seated the push rod porperly in the rocker and in the lifter and tightened it until i felt that it was not spinnning as freely as it was, then cranked it down another 1/2 turn for the preload. Then i spun the hub a quarter turn after that going off the chiltons book for the firing order
So my question is how are you guys basing drag? Is it the same way i did?
Other Questions are can i get a 1 or a pair of comp cam 1.6 rockers or do i have to buy a whole new set and if so where?
Also do you thing that my car shutting off could because of that rocker coming off?
Car 97 SS V8 was insalling CC305 rockers and springs were alredy on it so i didnt have to mess with the springs.

Re: Another Setting Valve Lash Question?

Well.. I've never heard of tightening untill you "feel drag" but maybe that is one way... what I did was, when the cylinder is at TDC firing, with one hand you tighten the nut, and with your finger of your other hand... you take the pushrod end of the rocker and gently pull it up, let go, pull up, let go and you keep doing this untill the rocker just stops "rocking up" (in other words, just untill there is NO play in an UP AND DOWN motion... don't confuse this with a little bit of play side-to-side, thats normal) So when there is no up and down play, the rocker is at "zero lash" from there you tighten the nut another 1/2 - 3/4 of a turn (usually anywhere inbetween that is fine.. but check any instructions that may have come with the rockers.. maybe it's a full turn for the ones you have?) Then you just snug up the poly lock.. and repeat this following the firing order after turning the crank hub 1/4 turn (which you already know)

Thats how I did mine and haven't had a single problem.

Hope that helps a little... someone else with surely chime in.

Sounds like you your setting the valve lash right, but are you setting the right valve's in the firing order as it say?

#1 firing position adjust exhaust #1-3-4-8, intake #1-2-5-7, turn one revolution then adjust exhaust #2-5-6-7, intake #3-4-6-8.
