Another cam thread!

Well I was thinking of going with with a h/c setup from either AI or LE but money's starting to look a little tighter than expected. I'm thinking of just going cammed on stock heads for a while and do a h/c setup in the future (probably be a while). Also I will admit i'm pretty much clueless when it comes to picking a cam I've tried doing several searches but just cant seem to find what i'm looking for.

Car is a 95 TA M6 and my current setup is 3.73 gears, LT's, CAI...I'd like a cam that could make real good power from about 2500-6000...give or take. I'd like for it to have a good lopey sound to it too. I don't want to overcam the car because later on when i get the heads ported, i'll probably swap in a bigger cam anyways. I know i also need the right valvetrain parts to compliment the cam...just clueless to which ones!

After all that I'm planning on doing some suspension work over the summer.

Anyone have any thoughts? I know everyone's getting tired of these cam thread's, but I would love to hear any suggestions.

Thanks,
Adam

Re: Another cam thread!

well i am in the same boat as you, but i have my cam picked out... you could always go with the Hotcam kit, runs about 550$ and has EVERYTHING you need to do the cam install, but some people say go with a better cam.. cc305 is decent, i am goign with the GM 846, its exactly the same as the cc305 but has a 112 LSA (the number at end) which is the degree of seperation between the lobes, less seperation more valve overlap, more lope, to get a feel of how a cam works and what parts you need to replace along with it go to www.howstuffworls.com and go to car camshafts, pretty interesting... a list of what else to install along with the cam: 1.6:1 ratio Rockers, heavier springs, new timing chain, maybe new lifters, rods, and other little odds and ends (retainers, locks...)

i would suggest you talk to bret bauer (SStrokerAce) about something for your needs. if you're honest with him about your combo and tell him what you want the car to do you'll end up with what you're after, he'll work with whatever your budget is from a shelf cam to a custom. if you just want something thats easy to get and not too rough running i'd suggest going with the le1 cam (which bret designed) you can get it from lloyd without the heads, just shoot him an email if you have any questions about it.

Re: Another cam thread!

My cam has those numbers... except from about 3-6 and the numbers in my sig are what it put out when tuned to a 112LSA cam and pulling off at 5450 when revving to 6k.

XE 227/233 Cam with a 560/569 lift at the valves with the 1.6rr

I like the CC306. It isn't too bad for daily driving(I drive mine 40 miles everyday during the summer in traffic), and makes great power even on stock heads. Then once you do get the heads ported, you prolly won't have to step up to a bigger cam(unless you want to make huge power).
Numbers and times in sig.

I'd love to see someone do a CC305 on a 112lsa with stock heads.

Re: Another cam thread!

I really like this XE 224/230. It has a really wide powerband, a nice lope, and is just as fast as the 306 in the quarter with stock heads with great seat of the pants response. I have yet to make a good, clean, full pass. My transmission is having 2/3 shift issues and I have to let off to make that shift. I'm still running 12.30's at 111.4 LIFTING OFF with a really crappy converter! If you want to extend the usable rpm of this cam, use 1 3/4 headers, a 58 mm throttle body, hydra rev, and 1.7 rockers.

Almost, but the GM846 has a tad bit more lift if I remember right.

Well now, that GM846 doesn't sound too shabby. Anybody know where I can find some info on it?

Thanks everyone!

Re: Another cam thread!

do a search on it... crane cams makes the 845, 846, 847, for GM its just like the 305, sounds a bit better, and has a little more lift.. emissions can be passed on it with a good tune also...

but if you were thinking about going with the CC306 then the GM 847 might be better for you..

Re: Another cam thread!

Well I just looked up the GM847 and it looks like u need to rev up to 65-6700 or so to get the best result from that cam. Not sure if this is absolutely correct or not. I'm really looking for something with good midrange and top end up to about 6-6200.

Just reading material in reference to WS6T3RROR's post. The good thing is that setup will work great with a LE2 or LE3 head later on. Actually that's the way Jon A is going now, that cam and valvetrain with a LE3 set of heads on top of it all.

BTW.....

GM 846 222/230 .543/.563 (with 1.6:1 Rockers) and a 112 LSA
GM 847 234/242 .575/.595 (with 1.6:1 Rockers) and a 112 LSA

There are some good cams in that range that will probably be where you want to end up.
