Question another ? about 1.7 RR's

I did a search and there seems to be a lot of varied opinions. I was thinking about using 1.7's with the stock cam instead of installing a new cam because it would be a lot easier, at least in my opinion. Most people said that the bad thing about them is that, since they create more lift, they wear the engine more. But is there any difference between using 1.7's and installing a cam that will produce the same lift with 1.5's? It doesn't seem like there would be a difference, I think they were just saying that for people who are using aftermarket cams. If I did do this, the only other things I would have to buy would be springs, taller valve covers, and an alternator relocation bracket, right? Let me know your opinions...

Thanks!

I'm looking at this option as well.

As far as I can tell the only increased stress caused by using 1.7 RR's would fall on the lifters and pushrods, since by using a higher ratio rocker you are reducing the mechanical advantage on that side of the rocker. But since we are not increasing the lift on the lobe itself, I don't think that the amount of stress put to the lifters/pushrods would be much more than using a higher lift cam. Springs, of course, still need to be changed. Also, 7/16" studs and guideplates will be needed as I don't believe that a self-aligning 1.7 ratio rocker is being made. (I could be wrong about this)

After looking at the inside of one of my valve covers I'm pretty sure that a 1.7 ratio rocker will work with the stockers with just a bit of clearancing. I also found 1.8 ratio rockers one Compcams website but I'm not clear on their fitment.

Keep in mind that tons of lift w/o cam duration and good flowing heads isn't going to work any miarcles.

Go to ls1.com and do a search for a member that is also on this board he did the 1.7's and there is alot of info from his posts about the good and bad things about them, he currently has the fastest all bolt-on stock head/cam/bottom end ta in the country. his name is sar2k. he runs 11.9 i have those rockers also and will be doing them soon. like he suggested to me i will suggest the same to you guys. get youreself some lash caps for the valves. because of that ratio lift the tops of his valve stems started to look like a smile. the lash caps are hardened and should prevent that from happining. also get guideplates and hardened pushrods with new springs/retainers/valve locks. like i said do a search on him and read his posts. alot of great info...........

A guy on my local F-body board installed the Scorpion 1.7 RR in place of his Crane 1.6 RR on a hotcammed Corvette. Got 16 addl RWHP. Here is the post.

Post back with how they turn out. I would like to see what they gain on a stock cam.
