Alternator "squealing"

This is actually on my wife's Grand Prix, but...the car started squealing really bad when I cranked it. I took the belt off and turned all the pulleys, and the alternator pulley would make a squealing sound. I checked the voltage at the alternator and it is 14.3 or so volts, so that should be okay. Is this "squeal" an indicator or does the alternator need lubricated or something? How can I fix this?confused:

did you get oil on the belt? That would cause a squeel under load..

Squealing from the alternator is a good sign that the shaft support bearings are going. It might still read good voltage, but it's life is coming to an end.

Wiggle the pulley up and down and see if there is any play to the bearing. If there is, your bearings in the main shaft are going oval. This could cause the alternator to seize solid after a prolonged period of time.
