Alternative timing chains/w stock Water pump?
Alternative timing chains/w stock Water pump?
I know there is the LT-4 Timing chain, but I ain't spending $200-300 on any timing chain... I am also looking into a CSI water pump, but want the reliablity of a stock pump. So are there any other good replacement timing chains that ain't gonna break the bank?
Thanks
Thanks
Ok listen up....you absolutely do not need an aftermarket timing chain. The only difference between your stock pump and the electric pump is the fact that the upper most hole in your timing cover will be plugged. Therefore you will no long have you waterpump driveshaft present, which normally runs off of the cam sprocket. The chain is a good idea to replace if you want to do that (i did with my csi swap) but in hindsight, the stock chain was not even stretched that much, but i did the swap for peace of mind. gmpartsdirect.com is cheap way to get good gm replacement parts, but they charge an enormous amount of shipping and handling.
so to try and steer you in the right directions - yes do the electric water pump swap, i noticed more upper end power, as my redline was cleared up a lot, and the reliability so far has been perfect. the electrical hookup was very easy as well. no do not do some ridiculous timing chain swap that cost $150+
hope this helps

The stock chain and lower sproket is the same chain and sproket that's been used on small blocks for a very long time. The only part thats different is the upper sproket which is steel or some sort of cast metal (not aluminum coated in nylon), so what you do if you just want to put in a new chain is to get your self a replacement timing chain set for a late 70's caprice. Should run you less than $20, toss the upper sprocket and install the new lower sproket and chain with your old upper sproket.
If your not going to use the water pump drive you could probably get yourself a factory chain from a early 90's fbody/caprice with the tbi motor and a roller cam and be able to use all three parts in the timing set.
Cloyes has released a stock replacement LT-1 chain which I believe is a single roller for the 92-94's for the non-vented cap. Wish I would have found that about 4 months ago.

Here is both stock ones and a double roller set that you have to use an electric water pump with.
