Alternative to K&N kit

Today I got ambitious and decide to take out the old k&n clean it oil it etc.

I remember the first time I installed it I placed a concrete block above on the duct to hold it down so I can twist the filter on. (everyone knows how little you have to grab on to with it) Well it just wouldn't go back on this time, after one last attempt the k&n filter started folding like an accordian.

Time for an alternative, anyone else chuuck this piece of crap out and try another kit that the filter might acutally go on to?

Sorry for the rant and length I'm really pissed.

i know what you are talking about. they give you no lip to get the filter on and when you try pushing the filter on the lip you did have just disappears as the intake raises up. I'm glad i don't have to deal with it anymore now that i have the SS setup.

ss is an induction kit and necessitates an ss hood, or something of the sort. you can also look into a Moroso or Lingenfelter CAI. The SS airbox setup doesnt give any more...and may give less gains than a cai.

Sorry to hear that, I never thought it would be a 2 person job to change an air filter, but with this set up it is. I think eventually I'm going to go with the SS setup.

People claim that **** all the time and no one has any real numbers, i had a K&N for a while and made the switch there was no seat of the pants diff. I can tell you i drove my car for about 1 week on the stock air box while i waited for the SS to arrive and there was a huge loss of power with the stocker. Once the SS was back on it was just as strong as with the CAI. Most CAI's have a "pinched" area to clear the radiator support and the pinched area is actually a pretty good bottle neck, and i don't think the SS setup could be any worse than the pinches some of these CAI's have.

You can see pictures of the SS setup in my Sig, you can't miss it. My only complaint about it is if you tear in to the motor a lot you have to remove the Ram Air setup.

Re: Alterative to K&N kit

Something must be said for having the airbox itself sitting directly above the intake and hot engine.

It probably has an effect when you are standing still but how many of us care about performance right then. When you are moving if you look at the intake air temp sensor its just the same temp as it is outside. Moving = no problems, stopped = lost hp. Big deal.

Re: Alterative to K&N kit

so ~$800 for a cheap SS hood and airbox setup, or ~$180 for a brand new CAI...gives the same gains. I think I'll stick with the CAI; that way I can keep my options for aftermarket hoods open.

SS hoods are the only good looking hoods for Camaro's anyways.

Re: Alterative to K&N kit

I just want to know what manufacturer makes a CAI that the filter actually fits on to. I want to replace the K&N kit with something that fits better. I want to keep my hood, and the stock air box is long gone.

Thanks again

Re: Alterative to K&N kit

The intake is supposed to be bolted down so it doesnt move up when you are pushing the filter back on. I was able to do mine alone. I just pushed up and the intake didnt budge. I was going to remove the bolts to take the intake off until i realized that this is not necessary, as the filter may be removed from below while intake is on (I did not install it myself, so i was unaware)

Thanks for your reply.

Which brand do you have? The k&n doesn't bolt down, it slips into a backet that gets bolted down where the airbox used to be.

Re: Alterative to K&N kit

My Morosso bolts down into the top of the old air box. Never had any issues in install or de-install of the filter.
