AIR pump TSB: Do you think the dealer will give me the parts?

I know there is a TSB for our AIR pump being faulty. I'm niot keen on leaving my car at the dealer for them to work on it. Do you think they'd agree to just give me the parts required in the TSB? That way I can do it myself? AIR pump replacement isn't that hard is it?

...Wish i could just get rid of the damn thing....damn emissions...

If you're looking for free parts, that was only good during the warranty period. TSB's are only a guide for maintenance personnel, a little different than a recall where you'd get the parts and labor done for free. TSB's cover a common discrepancy with a vehicle, and the parts required along with information to fix the problem.

There was a recall on the airpump, but I am not sure if 97 was covered. You should check with your dealer.

They replaced the air pump in my '95 free of charge long after the warranty expired on it.

Here in CA, the air pump/check valve recall is mandatory before you can renew the registration on the car. Mine was recalled and I took the car to the dealer and showed them under the hood. With the supercharger and smog pump relocated they didn't want to touch it (the feeling was mutual!) and they let me come in on a Saturday and install it myself while a tech watched. Another local guy was able to take the parts home and bring it back for verification. It really just depends on the dealer...you'll have to ask them. As long as they are getting their reimbursement they should be willing to work with you.

yeah, Im a dealer tech, and I highly doubt they will just give you the parts. the dealer is responsible for replaceing the parts correctly to satisfy the recall. i cant remember if 97's are covered either. you should call your dealership, have them run your VIN. if its covered, you can set up an appointment to WAIT for your vehicle to be repaired. that means you can watch them (Im sure from a distance though) replace the pump, and know noones hotdoggin your car.

The dealer would not let me do it myself, so I never had it done. I am not letting them tear up my car. GM finally stopped sending me recall notices on it.

Used air pumps are dirt cheap just buy one and slap it on. My air pump went out and my dealer was willing to replace it this was in 01, but i didn't want the hassle of not having my car for a day so i just gutted the Air pump system metal tube and all. It took some cutting to get the tube out from under engine but at least its not in the way when i'm replacing plugs behind the alternator.

Unfortunately, in CA it's not voluntary and they are now requiring it before you can re-register. Just replacing the pump won't do you any good (in CA), they want to see the kit (extra solenoid/check valve) and correction sticker under the hood now. Once it's completed, the dealer notifies the DMV.
