Question Air Bags

I had a 94 Z that was involved in an accident and the air bags deployed i since then bought a 96 Z shell with undeployed air bags and moved all of the equipment (motor, trans and wiring harness) into the 96. I am reusing my old air bag sensors but my air bag light stays on all of the time. Will the 94 air bag sensors work with 96 air bags? I have been talking to fbodysalvage (Thanks again for all of your help) because i thought that i need to get some undeployed sensors but i read that you don’t have to with our cars. Also which one do i have a derm or sdm? Any help with this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Re: Air Bags

I replied to the other post you replied to. As I said, the modules are for the most part year specific. If you light is still on also, make sure you check your yellow airbag wires for a short.

Re: Air Bags

I'm not sure what of yours got moved to what.

The 94 system has a DERM, a dual pole arming sensor and 2 descriminators. In the 96, the SDM does it all. In a collision, the SDM must be changed. The descriminators only need be changed if in the area of the accident.

Only the air bags are compatible from 94 to 96.

Also, once the 94 has an accident, a DTC51 is set until it is cleared by a scanner. At the very least you have to reset that code to get the light out. The data area also holds history for up to 8 crashes before it "overflows" you may want to clear the data area also.

Don't bother asking Autozone to do it.

Re: Air Bags

Is there a difference between 94 and 96 air bags? I am using 96 air bags with 94 wiring harness and air bag sensors? Also where can i get that reset at?

Re: Air Bags

As I mentioned, the air bags are the same part number from 94 to 96 so they are compatible.

So do I understand you correctly that you only used the 96 air bags in the 94 system? All the other system components are from the 94?

If that is the case, you will need to find a shop that can scan OBDI systems. Any shop with a Snap-on unit can do it. The dealer can obviously, but will charge at least $60.00 to hook up. A small independent shop should be able to do it for less.

Keep in mind, you may still have another problem. And as I mentioned, if you were in a front impact collision, the front descriminator should be changed. If the collision effected the cockpit, the passenger descriminator should be changed as well.
