It's most likely that the OPTI or wires is the problem. Try spraying the plug wires from distributor to plug with WD-40....really drench them. Wait a while and see if the problem improves. The drench the opti cap with WD-40 and see if it helps. If the problem gets better by treating the wires, all you need to do is replace them. If you didn't see an improvement with treating wires but did with treating the opti you'll have to replace the opti cap and rotor at the very least.....

What year is the car? I had the same problem with automatic carwashes. I would let the car sit outside with the hood open in the sun for awhile and it would dry back put and run fine. Since I converted too a vented options I've had no more issues

Venting by itself doesn't fix this problem. Changing over to the new distributor brought along a new cap and rotor.....

The distributor cap, rotor and wires are maintenance items that get terribly overlooked. If this was a car with a traditional distributor, the first thing people would recommend would be to change out the cap. Same thing here...just a unique location.....

Check the Opti harness connector for corrosion, damaged pins. Scan it for codes.

Re: after spraying off motor at car wash it will not start up

i went through this about 2 months ago. i asked just about the same questions as you. the answers i was given were go oem wit an ac delco, or a delphi. some suggested the msd unit, but then again ppl have had problems with those as well. some words of advice i found really helpful were "you get what you pay for". i went with a delphi unit off ebay for 350 bucks i think with a 3 year warranty. i've put about 3k on the new opti, and its been runing great. i had some other problems that i thout my have been the opti, but truly werent. theres a thread here abot properly diagnosing a bad opti. make sure u go through that before deciding to change yours out. is it a long and time consuming process? yes. is it hard? not terribly, especially when you have friends that can help you out. there are also plenty of write-ups out there on all the dos and donts of an opti install. good luck man!

You might get lucky, and the opti will dry and be OK.

The is getting totally out of control. Two virtually identical threads on the same question, posted in the same day is NOT a good idea.

I'm going to merge the two threads.

In the future, post the question once. If you don't have a response AFTER 24 HOURS push the thread back to the top by posting a message "TTT".
