After AC delete, can I mount the alternator low?

After AC delete, can I mount the alternator low?
just what tghe title says...if I remove the AC compressor, can I mount the alternator in it's place? Anyone make brackets? What belt would be needed?
While I'm at it, after I remove the AC, what is left in that big plenum that I would need to keep? Can I get rid of most of that too? Maybe find a plenum from a non AC car? Pretty much all I'd want to keep is the heater core and blower...for defogging the windows?
