Advise needed removing waterpump gasket

I'm in the middle of my waterpump project (what a pain in the a**). Before I install the new pump, I'd like some advise on getting the old gasket material off the block. With the block being aluminium I dont want to get to aggresive scraping into it. Any suggestions? Thanx.

Scotch/3M pads like you use on dishes but heavier grit work good.

They sell little kits at Walmart with the pads that fit in a drill and are about 1 1/2" in diameter.

I tried to use them to clean the heads when I put my headers on. They worked good but hard to get to the sides of the heads. Should be easier on the front of the block.
