Advice/opinion needed about Opti & WP... and LT1 Edit

I have my engine all disassembled and every now and then I see everyone say to replace the opti and wp while it is out, especially when doing a cam swap since it is already out. What exactly is the purpose of this? The opti I can understand since I hear they frequently go out, especially in the 94 models more than the newer ones which come with vented opti. But the WP I do not understand, why it should be changed. Please provide me some feedback on this so I can prevent any problems in the future, but lets not forget "If its not broke, dont fix it"

Another thing, I am switching out to a 383 with a CC305 cam and other stuff. Some people are starting to bash on Bryan about PCMforless tuning, and I hear about LT1 edit. Where can I get this program and how much does the program along with cables cost? Can anyone point me in the right direction please?

Thanks for the help.

Depending on how many miles are on the pump, I would replace it while it is easy. Especially on the 94 where if it fails it can take out the Opti. It depends on how valuable your time is. If you got lots of it then save the money and wait till it actually fails.

I have 158k miles on my car, and it appears to be stock WP. I did not know about the opti problem when I bought the car and never got to ask them if they replaced the opti. Only had the car for a year and put 13k miles on it in a year, never had an opti problem but already burnt a spark plug wire in half on cylinder number 6. I plan on getting Taylor OTVC wires and hopefully these wont burn up like the stock ones.

When you say the WP fails and it takes out the Opti, is this how it goes? I thought the Opti failed on its own.

If you have an opti that is not sealed well, moisture infiltration can cause problems. When the w/p begins to die, it usually dumps coolant out the weep hole on the bottom of the pump. The opti is right there behind the w/p, so coolant has the possibility of fouling the opti.

If I had known this I would have tried harder to keep the coolant off the opti, which I didnt when removing the WP and all. Probably should go with a new opti. Probably a good time as any for a new WP and Opti anyways, but I always go by "if its not broke, dont fix it"

I still need info for LT1 Edit software and cables. Can anyone tell me how much it is and where I can get my hands on it?

Thanks

www.lt1edit.com for the software
www.akmcables.com or www.wotelectronics.com for the cable

There is also Tunercat, which does the same thing and can be had a bit cheaper You will probably want freescan or datamaster too.
